In this book, the author views different concepts like beauty, pleasure, and aesthetics in purely biological and evolutionary terms and anticipates the modern-day examination of the world of art and aesthetics from the point of view of neuroscience, neuropsychology, and biology. Being armed with the findings of biology and animal behavior, de Gourmont goes on the attack against high-brow artistic elites who have conceited notions about art and who assess artistic works pretending to have a measure of popular success.

The scars of our pasts tell stories of how we give and receive love in the present. After accepting a prestigious position as a principal writer at an independent publishing house in Manhattan, Monroe Bastien returns to her roots in the south during the summer on special assignment. A series of candid conversations compels her to chronicle the multi-faceted love story of her mother Ava Rossi, an independent C-Suite executive and father Cane Bastien, a headstrong NFL Vet turned sommelier. After delving into the details surrounding their tumultuous relationship, she uncovers the source of its demise thrusting her into an unexpected path of self-discovery and a budding romance of her own. My Love Comes Down captures the essence of second chances, forgiveness and the crossroads of our lives that force us to examine hard truths while discovering who we are, what we want, and how much of our pasts we must leave behind to unlock the highest form of love in the present.

Culture Is Our Business is Marshall McLuhan's sequel to The Mechanical Bride: Folklore of Industrial Man. Returning to the subject of advertising newly armed with the electric sensibility that informed The Gutenberg Galaxy, Understanding Media, and The Medium Is the Massage, McLuhan takes on the mad men (a play on the ad men of Madison Avenue) of the sixties. Approaching commercial messages as unacknowledged art forms and cultural artifacts, McLuhan delivers a series of probes that pick apart their meanings and underlying values, their paradoxes and paralogisms, and their overt function as persuasion and propaganda. Through humor, satire, and a poetic sensibility, he provides us with a serious exploration of the consumer culture that emerged out of the electronic media environment. In keeping with the participatory ethos of the Internet that McLuhan so clearly anticipated, this is a book that is meant to open the door to further study, reflection, and discussion, and to encourage the development of critical reception on the part of the reader.

Englishman Robert Livermore jumped ship in Southern California in 1822, yet just 15 years later became the respected owner of the 40,000-acre Las Positas land grant. Here he built his new Californio wife an adobe house in 1839. The wealth that flowed into California during the gold rush allowed Livermore to import a two-story house around the Horn, but entrepreneurs and squatters flowed in as well. Nathaniel Patterson opened the first hotel in the old Livermore adobe, frequented by miners on their way from the South Bay to the Sierra gold mines. Laddsville, a village built where the roads to Stockton and Dublin met, was also a going concern until the Central Pacific pushed over the Altamont Pass. On this line grew the town founded by William Mendenhall in 1869, named for pioneer Livermore, who had died more than a decade earlier. Soon Livermore became the valley's commercial center for hay, wheat, barley, wine grapes, and ranching.
