US higher education institutions host more than a million international students, many of whom speak English as a second language (ESL). As this number is projected to grow, it is vital that new curricular and non-curricular approaches to English language development are considered, including rigorous evaluation processes. This book introduces a framework to guide institutions in examining their views and beliefs regarding language acquisition and current approaches to international student success. It makes a distinction between a philosophy of support and a philosophy of development with a focus on the latter. It provides stakeholders with theoretical and practical foundations from which they can design, develop, and implement new models for students’ linguistic and cultural growth. Application of the framework will encourage institutions to examine support models that have been in place for decades and develop effective processes for generating innovative programming and practices aimed at helping international ESL students achieve their educational goals.

Most education settings in South Africa and other post-colonial emerging economies are multilingual and diverse. Indeed, multilingual classrooms have become commonplace in developed countries as well. Yet many countries in post-colonial Sub-Saharan Africa use English as a medium of instruction in multilingual contexts from the early grades. The implications of this practice for teaching and learning are multifaceted. Its negative effects on achievement, retention and dropout rates, psychosocial wellbeing and community development cannot be overstated and are well documented. Societal emancipation and transformation begin in the education setting, and no transformation discourse can be successful if the issues surrounding multilingualism are not properly addressed. Teaching and learning pedagogies that ignore the complexities and dynamics of multilingual classrooms are simply reinforcing past worldviews and improved learner-achievement results cannot be expected unless things are approached differently. This book, written by authors from across Africa from first-hand experience in research and teaching, focuses mainly on teaching pedagogy and on evidenced-based analysis and guidelines. It supports, among other arguments, the need to view indigenous languages as assets and resources within classrooms. It is a resource for teachers and learners in multilingual contexts worldwide.

This survey provides unprecedented scope and detail of analysis on higher education in the Asia-Pacific region. In this era of global integration, convergence and comparison, the balance of power in worldwide higher education is shifting. In less than two decades the Asia-Pacific region has come to possess the largest and fastest growing higher education sector on Earth. The countries of East and Southeast Asia and the Western Pacific together enrol 50 million tertiary students, compared to 14 million in 1991, and will soon conduct a third of all research and development. In China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Korea and Singapore, ‘world-class’ universities are emerging at breakneck pace, fostered by modernizing governments that see knowledge and skills as key to a future shaped equally by East and West, and supported by families deeply committed to education. But not all Asia-Pacific countries are on this path, not all reforms are effective, and there are marked differences between nations in levels of resources, educational participation, research, state controls and academic freedom. Higher Education in the Asia-Pacific: Strategic responses to globalization provides an authoritative survey of tertiary education in this diverse and dynamic region. The journal publishes scholarly peer-reviewed articles on international students in tertiary education, secondary education, and other educational settings that make significant contributions to research, policy, and practice in the internationalization of education worldwide.
