Jacob's Land...years in the making, is a carefully researched and factual account about life on New York's frontier before, during, and after the American Revolutionary War. Following the experiences of a German immigrant family, an Indian Leader (Joseph Brant), and George Washington's Surveyor General (Simeon DeWitt) it brings the hardships, dangers, ironies, and politics of the revolution up close and personal for the reader. Striking parallels with today's terrorist attacks, people (Indians and whites alike) on New York's frontier could never be certain when neighbors were plotting to raid, murder and burn. However, there is considerably more to the story than war episodes. It is about conquest and division of Iroquois Nation lands and creation of places like Ithaca that provided the agricultural and forest resources enabling New York to become the "Empire" State and the USA a nation where common people enjoy lifestyles unheard of in the annals of history. Finally, Jacob's Land...is about our dwindling connection to the land and how that undermines the pursuit of happiness.

Land ownership by individual citizens is a cornerstone of American heritage and a centerpiece of the American dream. Thomas Jefferson called it the key to our success as a democracy. Yet the question of who owns America not only remains unanswered but is central to a fundamental conflict that can pit private property rights advocates against government policymakers and environmentalists. Land use authority Harvey M. Jacobs has gathered a provocative collection of perspectives from eighteen contributors in the fields of law, history, anthropology, economics, sociology, forestry, and environmental studies. Who Owns America? begins with the popular view of land ownership as seen though the television show Bonanza! It examines public regulation of private land; public land management; the roles culture and ethnic values play in land use; and concludes with Jacobs’ title essay. Who Owns America? is a powerful and illuminating exploration of the very terrain that makes us Americans. Its broad set of theoretical and historical perspectives will fascinate historians, environmental activists, policy makers, and all who care deeply about the land we share.

PUBLIC LANDS RANCHING: Is it a harmless, romantic, remnant of the Old West? Or is it the rural West's most destructive influence? Controversy rages & continues to spread. Some are saying this will be the next major environmental struggle in the Western United States. WASTE OF THE WEST is-- & probably will remain--the most complete account of public lands ranching ever assembled. With easy-reading text & more than 1000 photos, drawings, cartoons, graphs, & charts on 600 (8 1/2" x 11") pages, Lynn Jacobs explores every facet of this obscure yet vitally important issue. Chapters: introduce public lands ranching & describe its historic & present situations; detail its economic ("welfare ranching"), political, social/cultural, & (especially) environmental impacts; discuss livestock abuse; take a global livestock-production tour; discredit the many excuses stockmen use to justify their 100-year reign over the rural West; predict the future; present alternatives; & provide many ideas on what people can do to help end this destructive & unjust situation. Final pages offer ideas for activism, contacts, public lands ranching statistics, inspirational quotations, a 500-source bibliography, & a thorough index. WASTE OF THE WEST is for people who care about Nature. As much as an eye-opening educational tool, it is a call to action.

Remains of the Jews studies the rise of Christian Empire in late antiquity (300-550 C.E.) through the dense and complex manner in which Christian authors wrote about Jews in the charged space of the “holy land.” The book employs contemporary cultural studies, particularly postcolonial criticism, to read Christian writings about holy land Jews as colonial writings. These writings created a cultural context in which Christians viewed themselves as powerful—and in which, perhaps, Jews were able to construct a posture of resistance to this new Christian Empire. Remains of the Jews reexamines familiar types of literature—biblical interpretation, histories, sermons, letters—from a new perspective in order to understand how power and resistance shaped religious identities in the later Roman Empire.
