This book provides a comprehensive description of the volcanological, petrological and geochemical features of the Copahue volcano, located at the border between Argentina and Chile. Scientific studies are limited for this volcanic system, due to its remote location and difficult access in winter. However, Copahue is one of the most active volcanic systems in the southern Andes. Monitoring the volcano's activity is of utter importance, as it provides means of existence for the nearby village of the same name, hosting the world's highest-located hot-springs resort. This book's aim is to present the current monitoring activities, and to describe future research programs that are planned in order to mitigate volcanic hazards. Special attention is therefore devoted to the social and industrial activities close to the volcano, such as health therapies and geothermal energy exploitation. In a special section, the Copahue volcano is presented as a terrestrial modern analog for early-Earth and Mars environments.
La relazione tra commercio e cambiamento climatico è molto complessa e le interazioni tra i due fenomeni si manifestano in molteplici modi. I meccanismi sono sia diretti che indiretti e le caratteristiche globali degli impatti sul clima e le relative responsabilità incrementano le difficoltà interne al dibattito politico. A tal fine, una profonda conoscenza dei collegamenti tra settori e regioni come così come tra diversi livelli decisionali, è un prerequisito per gli esercizi di valutazione delle politiche climatiche e/o commerciali.
Il libro descrive e affronta alcune questioni tutt’ora aperte nel campo della costruzione di indicatori compositi. Si propone come complemento a riferimenti consolidati quali OECD handbook of composite indicators, e approfondisce temi che saranno certo oggetto di ampio sviluppo nel prossimo futuro, soprattutto nell’ambito degli indicatori di benessere e progresso umano. La prima parte del libro illustra lo stato dell’arte delle metodologie per la costruzione di indicatori compositi mentre la seconda parte affronta specifici nodi critici piu’ recenti. Il libro fornisce strumenti utili sia a ricercatori con una conoscenza limitata degli indicatori compositi, che a studiosi interessati ad un aggiornamento su temi più avanzati.
"North Korea's Kŭmgangsan is one of Asia's most celebrated sacred mountains, comparable in fame to Mount Tai in China and Mount Fuji in Japan. The late Chosŏn (1650-1900) Korean elite went to Kŭmgangsan on pilgrimages to demonstrate and defend their high social status. Travelers used the mountain to cultivate practices such as naming sites, carving rock inscriptions, and joining a literary lineage. In pilgrimage, they sought an extraordinary experience that could be made only at a particular, nonsubstitutable site; they went on a journey of more than two weeks, following a prescribed route; and they journeyed to a locale that held significance for their religious, political, social, or cultural identity. Some Kŭmgangsan travelers expanded on the prescribed circular route to further demonstrate their social status, engaging with locales by leaving documentation of their visit. Based on multidisciplinary research drawing on literary writings, court records, gazetteers, maps, songs, and paintings, Carving Status at Kŭmgangsan transcends the traditional dichotomies between pilgrim and tourist by reconceptualizing pilgrimage in the premodern Korean context. The Advanced Thermal Emission and Reflection Radiometer (ASTER) is a research facility instrument on NASA’s Terra spacecraft. We celebrated the 20th anniversary of ASTER’s launch in December 1999. ASTER has been providing high spatial resolution multispectral data in the VNIR, SWIR, and TIR regions, and along-track stereo data. Starting April 2016, ASTER data have been distributed to the public at no cost. Another important and the most popular data set is the ASTER Global DEM, which covers almost the entire land surface at a 30 m grid size. ASTER data have been widely used in a variety of application areas such as land surface mapping and change detection, volcano and other natural hazard monitoring, mineral exploration, and urban heat island monitoring. This Special Issue consists of 12 papers (2 reviews, 9 articles, and 1 technical note) and covers topics including development of new techniques to process ASTER data, calibration activities to ensure long-term consistency of ASTER data, validation of the ASTER data products, and scientific achievements using ASTER data.
