Following World War II, Italian industrial designers began to earn worldwide acclaim for their lamp and lighting designs; since then the country has produced landmark models that have become classics of modern and contemporary design, such as lamps by the Castiglioni brothers and Artemide. This richly illustrated book documents the evolution of Italian lamp and lighting design from 1945 to the end of the twentieth century. A collection of essays by design historian Alberto Bassi, organized in seventeen sections, traces the industry’s critical and commercial successes and the unique relationship between tradition, decorative quality, technology, and production. Included are profiles of individual designers such the Castiglioni brothers, Vico Magistretti, Gino Sarfatti and Pietro Chiesa, and manufacturers such as Flos, Fontana Arte, and Luceplan. The book reproduces more than 300 archival and new photographs, original advertisements, product displays, and installations of lights and lighting. The design of bars and cafes has played an important role in the development of architecture in the twentieth century. This influence has been felt particularly strongly over the past thirty years, in a time when these social spaces have contributed significantly to the rediscovery and reinvention of cities across Europe and North America. This volume presents and examines this significant urban architectural production, and discusses it against a background of the design of cafes and bars across the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Major themes and developments are discussed and illustrated with case studies, from the functionalist pre-World War Two architects in Central Europe representing modern society through the design of public spaces, right up to the design of sophisticated bars and cafes as part of the recent urban renaissance of Barcelona and Paris in 1980s and London in the '90s.
This publication is aimed to support two MoMoWo traveling exhibitions which will be presented in six European countries in two years (2016-2017): indoor exhibition catalogue “100 Works in 100 Years. European Women in Architecture and Design. 1918-2018”, and outdoor exhibition “Women’s Tale. A Reportage on Women Designers”. Exhibition catalogue 100 Works in 100 Years. European Women in Architecture and Design. 1918-2018 brings together a selection of some of the most significant and representative examples of European architecture and design created by 100 women from the end of the First World War up until today. The number of works is symbolic, as ‘one hundred’ could also mean ‘countless’ as in the Latin word centium. While, the number of authors –each work has a different author– derives from MoMoWo’s choice to represent many different creators, consequently popularising lesser known figures, too. It includes biographies of women architects, civil engineers, furniture and industrial designers, urban planners, interior and landscape designers. It represents the main trends and major ‘schools’ of architecture and design all over Europe. The biographical data covers education and training, professional histories, networks women have operated in, including informal societies, memberships in trade bodies and associations, their profile as international, national, local and regional designers, as well as looking at how women have promoted their work i.e. in exhibitions, publications, competition entries, etc. The catalogue entries are followed by thirteen thematic essays on women architects and designers and by the outdoor exhibition catalogue “Women’s Tale. A Reportage on Women Designers”, where photographs by ten finalists of the MoMoWo Photo competition are presented. Izbrano število del je simbolično, saj 'sto' v latinščini lahko pomeni tudi 'nešteto' (lat. centium), medtem ko število ustvarjalk – vsako delo ima drugo avtorico – izhaja iz namena MoMoWo projekta predstaviti čim več različnih avtoric in s tem posledično osvetliti tudi manj znane osebnosti. Katalog vsebuje biografije arhitektk, gradbenih inženirk, oblikovalk na področju notranjega in industrijskega oblikovanja, urbanistk in krajinskih arhitektk iz 26-tih držav. Zastopane so glavne smeri in pomembne 'šole' na področju arhitekture in oblikovanja iz vse Evrope. Milan-based Antonio Citterio (1950- ), architect and product designer, is known internationally for his product designs for B&B, Vitra and Kartell. This book presents an overview of Citterio’s architecture, including the interiors he designed by Esprit in the 1980s when the clothing manufacturer was one of the first to commission a younger generation of emerging architects, as well as a detailed analysis of his product designs. Included are well-known pieces like his office chair for Vitra and his colourful plastic rolling carts for Kartell as well as his concept for the interior of a sports car for Alfa Romeo of 2000, which was never realized.
Milan-based Michele de Lucchi (1951- ), architect and product designer, is known internationally for his chairs and lighting. Part of the Memphis group with Ettore Sottsass of early 1980s, de Lucchi has also had a successful career working with such international manufacturers as Artemide, Olivetti, and Vitra. This book provides a comprehensive overview of his career and documents all of his many projects to date. Also included are reprints of de Lucchi’s key critical writings.
