Intermediate 1 Maths offers an attractive and motivating textbook designed to enthuse students. Attractively illustrated with colour coded explanations and worked examples, the book brings Maths into real-life contexts with activities that make the subject relevant to Intermediate 1 students, whilst offering comprehensive coverage of the syllabus in a focused and concise manner. There is an extensive range of relevant exam-style questions and assessment items to prepare for examination. A CD is included with the book, containing answers to all of the student exercises. The disc can be retained for use solely by the teacher, or released for student self-access according to preferred teaching and assessment strategies. The book covers all the outcomes in the four units of the Intermediate 1 Mathematics course, i.e. units 1, 2, 3 and the Applications of Mathematics unit. Each chapter concentrates on the required learning outcomes with questions, exercises, and end of topic summaries. Questions are designed to help students prepare and practise for unit tests, and the final exam features prominently throughout the book, whilst students are directed to the relevant chapters of the course depending on which units they are studying. Attention is given to both calculator and non-calculator examples in line with the two papers which make up the final exam, and each chapter contains student exercises (with answers supplied). A summary appears at the end of each chapter telling students what they should be able to do.

There are a great deal of books on introductory analysis in print today, many written by mathematicians of the first rank. The publication of another such book therefore warrants a defense. I have taught analysis for many years and have used a variety of texts during this time. These books were of excellent quality mathematically but did not satisfy the needs of the students I was teaching. They were written for mathematicians but not for those who were first aspiring to attain that status. The desire to fill this gap gave rise to the writing of this book. This book is intended to serve as a text for an introductory course in analysis. Its readers will most likely be mathematics, science, or engineering majors undertaking the last quarter of their undergraduate education. The aim of a first course in analysis is to provide the student with a sound foundation for analysis, to familiarize him with the kind of careful thinking used in advanced mathematics, and to provide him with tools for further work in it. The typical student we are dealing with has completed a three-semester calculus course and possibly an introductory course in differential equations. He may even have been exposed to a semester or two of modern algebra. All this time his training has most likely been intuitive with heuristics taking the place of proof. This may have been appropriate for that stage of his development.

This book was initially written to cover the S5 Intermediate 1 course which was an alternative to the S3/4 General course, but is now also being use with pupils in S3/4 and even with those in S2 and a precursor to starting the Intermediate 2, Credit or CfE National 5 course in S3. Again it is bright and encouraging, contains assessments along the way and includes a specimen exam paper. - It is in full colour. - It contains many graded examples for pupils practice allowing them to hopefully build up their confidence. - The book contains a Chapter 0, revising primarily the entire content of 5-14 Level D. - Each chapter contains a "What have I learned" exercise. - Each unit (Maths 1, 2 and 3) has a revision section and a specimen NAB. - Non-calculator exercises included in each unit. - On-going cumulative home exercises built into the course as a further means of consolidation. - A Specimen Intermediate Paper 1 and Paper 2 is included at the end of the book. - Books are double stitch-bound for strength and durability. - Very reasonably priced at £9.45 per book. - A Homework/Assessment pack is also available.
