This SAE Aerospace Recommended Practice (ARP) discusses damage to aircraft fuselages caused by ground equipment contact at servicing and recommends methods to be incorporated or considered in ground equipment design for protection against that damage. This ARP, superseding former AIR 1558A originally published in 1978, specifies both passive devices and current state of the art active detection systems that should be incorporated or considered in GSE design in order to ensure aircraft protection against fuselage damage resulting from GSE interface. The change of document status from AIR to ARP is intended to take into account research findings on composite fuselage aircraft protection.

This Aerospace Information Report (AIR) discusses damage to aircraft caused by ground equipment contact and suggests methods of protecting against that damage.ARP1558 was unanimously approved by AGE-2, AGE-2C, and the Aerospace Council then published on 10/06/2014. Its Rationale underlines that "This ARP supersedes former AIR1558A in order to ensure aircraft protection against fuselage damage." The change of document status and contents was agreed because AIR1558A had become obsolete and its application would present a significant safety hazard to newer aircraft types with composite fuselages, dealt with in ARP1558 through state-of-the-art techniques. Therefore, AIR1558A is hereby cancelled and superseded by ARP1558 for safety reasons.

This book is an attempt to present under one cover the current state of knowledge concerning the potential lightning effects on aircraft and that means that are available to designers and operators to protect against these effects. The impetus for writing this book springs from two sources- the increased use of nonmetallic materials in the structure of aircraft and the constant trend toward using electronic equipment to handle flight-critical control and navigation function.

GROUNDS FOR GROUNDING The first book to cover grounding from the circuit to system and across the entire spectrum of applications Grounds for Grounding provides a complete and thorough approach to the subject of designing electrical and electronic circuits and systems, blending theory and practice to demonstrate how a few basic rules can be applied across a broad range of applications. The authors begin with the basic concepts of Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC) that are essential for understanding grounding theory and its applications, such as “ground loop,” which is one of the most misunderstood concepts in EMC. Next, they provide an introduction to grounding, including safety grounding, grounding for control of electromagnetic interference, and grounding-related case studies. Subsequent chapter coverage includes: Fundamentals of grounding design Bonding principles Grounding for power distribution and lightning protection systems Grounding in wiring circuits and cable shields Grounding of EMI terminal protection devices Grounding on printed circuit boards Integrated facility and platform grounding system Practical case studies are integrated throughout the book to aid in readers’ comprehension and each chapter concludes with a useful bibliography. Grounds for Grounding is an indispensable resource for electrical and electronic engineers who work with the design of circuits, systems, and facilities.
