The history of globalisation is usually told as a history of shortening distances and acceleration of the flows of people, goods and ideas. Channelling Mobilities refines this picture by looking at a wide variety of mobile people passing through the region of the Suez Canal, a global shortcut opened in 1869. As an empirical contribution to global history, the book asks how the passage between Europe and Asia and Africa was perceived, staged and controlled from the opening of the Canal to the First World War, arguing that this period was neither an era of unhampered acceleration, nor one of hardening borders and increasing controls. Instead, it was characterised by the channelling of mobilities through the differentiation, regulation and bureaucratisation of movement. Telling the stories of tourists, troops, workers, pilgrims, stowaways, caravans, dhow skippers and others, the book reveals the complicated entanglements of empires, internationalist initiatives and private companies.

However, the discourse produced by the state and political parties on immigrants' participation is predominantly concerned with civic mobilisation and the involvement in organisations initiated by immigrants themselves. This paper addressing the less debated topic of immigrants' political participation acts therefore as a counterbalance to these discussions. In research special attention has been dedicated to the correlation between immigrants' participation and integration. The widespread claim that ethnic and religious immigrant associations trigger segregation and hinder integration into German society has been refuted by recent studies affirming the incorporation of active immigrants (e.g. Thränhardt 1999). As immigrants' participation has been proofed to be an important means to promote immigrant integration it deserves further academic attention. It appeals to me to observe and research immigrants as active, contributing individuals to our society. This perspectival manner of immigrants' representation endeavours to distract attention from the mainly cultural and problematic discourse that exists concerning the issue of migration in Germany. With the theoretical insights of Patrick Ireland among others the immigrants' mobilisation research field has been expanded to the influence of the institutional setting provided by the German state granting political participation opportunities to immigrants. This paper will especially answer the questions how the institutions and practices offered by the German government influences the participation of immigrants in the political sphere

This book explores Muslims’ civic and political participation in Australia and Germany, shedding light on their individual experiences, motives for, and personal implications of their multi-faceted engagement. Based on in-depth interviews with Muslims who have been active within a Muslim community context, mainstream civil society and the political arena, this comparative study reveals the enormous complexities and dynamics of active Muslim citizenship. The author paints a picture of Muslims as ‘almost ordinary’ citizens, who – despite experiences of stigmatisation and exclusion – often seek to contribute to the advancement of society and the promotion of social justice. Their civic engagement, even within a Muslim community context, builds intra- and cross-community networks, and contrary to widespread contestation of Islam and its place in the West, their faith is anything but a civic obstacle to their active citizenship agenda. In the past this took the form of a professional desire to make our politics always somewhere else and to do with persons characterized as in some way different from ourselves. Now distances shrink and old forms of difference melt as global forces give rise to new processes of differentiation and new possibilities for political collectivities. How does this affect the way we might design a politically relevant anthropology? This book examines these concerns in light of the author's shift from the study of rather distant people to people and places closer to home - a trend to be found within the discipline as a whole. How should anthropology respond to this change, as it increasingly finds itself in stamping grounds where other disciplines are already well-entrenched? How will work being done in anthropology intersect with that in other disciplines?
