This book addresses the changing relationships among political participation, political representation, and popular mobilization in Spain from the 1766 protest in Madrid against the early Bourbon reforms until the citizen revolution of 1868 that first introduced universal suffrage and led to the ousting of the monarchy. Popular Participation and the Democratic Imagination in Spain shows that a notion of the “crowd” internally dividing the concept of “people” existed before the advent of Liberalism, allowing for the enduring subordination of popular participation to representation in politics. In its wider European and colonial American context, the study analyzes semantic changes in a range of cultural spheres, from parliamentary debate to historical narrative and aesthetics. This monograph explores the social constructs surrounding artistic production in early modern Iberia through the lenses of gender and class by examining the rarely considered contribution of creative women in Spain and Portugal between 1550 and 1700. Using the life-stage framework popular in texts of the period and drawing on a broad spectrum of materials including conduct guidebooks, treatises and conventual rules, this book examines the constraints imposed by gender-related social structures through microhistories of nuns, married, and unmarried women. The text spans class boundaries in its analysis of the work of painters, engravers, and sculptors, many of whom have until now eluded scholarly attention in English-language publications. An extensive bibliography promotes new avenues of inquiry into women’s contributions to the visual arts of the period. Desde hace dos o tres décadas la historia cultural ocupa un lugar preferente en la escena historiográfica, aunque con desfases cronológicos y distintas modalidades dependiendo de las circunstancias nacionales y, en este sentido, se impone una aproximación comparativa. El presente volumen pretende inscribirse en esta perspectiva, preguntándose por la realidad de un «giro cultural» en la historiografía mundial. Los numerosos colaboradores han aceptado responder a un plan de trabajo en el que, partiendo de la situación historiográfica de cada país, se analicen las modalidades de surgimiento y de estructuración de la historia cultural. La meta buscada no es normativa y contempla un planteamiento que combina el análisis de las obras, las singularidades de las coyunturas historiográficas y la organización de los mercados universitarios.
