Economic application of nonlinear dynamics, microscopic agent-based modelling, and the use of artificial intelligence techniques as learning devices of boundedly rational actors are among the most exciting interdisciplinary ventures of economic theory over the past decade. This volume provides us with a most fascinating series of examples on "complexity in action" exemplifying the scope and explanatory power of these innovative approaches.

The Geological Survey of Canada has been involved with the calibration of borehole gamma-ray spectrometers since 1977 when it constructed the first borehole gamma-ray calibration facilities. Inconsistencies in the results from intercomparisons with other facilities demonstrated the importance of reliable quantitative gamma-ray borehole measurements. The model boreholes described in this bulletin have been designed to avoid many of the problems associated with the construction of borehole calibration facilities which were revealed through the intercomparison exercises. This report should therefore be of practical use to those wishing to construct similar calibration facilities elsewhere.

This book offers a global presentation of issues under study for improving science education research in the context of the knowledge-based society at a European and international level. It includes discussions of several theoretical approaches, research overviews, research methodologies, and the teaching and learning of science. It is based on papers presented at the Third International Conference of the European Science Education Research Association (Thessaloniki, Greece, August 2001).
