Therefore advanced techniques for supporting the military commander and displaying complex tactical situation data in a clearly understandable way have to be developed and evaluated. In this connection a concept for pre-processing and visualising incoming tactical data and three-dimensional geographical data has been developed. This "Electronic Sandtable (ELSA)". as described in this paper, uses technology. The ELSA facilitates a plastic stereoscopic visualisation of three-dimensional data. It has been designed to simulate a sandtable as commonly used by the Armed Forces for tactical education and training. Therefore the visualisation of digital geographic data (elevation (DTED) and feature (DFAD) data) is necessary.
