Excerpt from School and Industrial Hygiene Again: the food and sleep of the child are mainly beyond the control of public schools. They are not wholly so, however; and it is a teacher's duty to discourage working in improper hours. Still more imperatively is it his duty to regulate the child's needs in school-time, to see if he is faint from want of food. To encourage and teach good habits, and to give opportunity for bodily exercise. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Journal of Industrial Hygiene, 1922, Vol. 3 The take-out boy (unskilled) is seated on a stool opposite the cutter; he opens the blank, removes the half-blown bottle by means of pincers, and drops it into a mold on the mold table. The second helper is seated at the mold table which he revolves so that the bottle is fully blown by an automatic blower, and passes under a torch to smooth the mouth. He then opens the mold, places the finished bottle on a table, and closes the mold. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Journal of Industrial Hygiene, Vol. 1: May, 1919-April, 1920 Each month of the war witnessed an improvement in many of these concerns. If the same forces which were so inde fatigable in their efforts for conserving the health and efficiency of the industrial army during the war will only carry over these efforts into the reconstruction period, an entirely new standard of existence will result for the working people of the land, the great army who must produce and provide. Thus, in the course of one short decade, broad humanizing principles Combined with scientific medical and surgical work have permanently established in the medi cal profession this far-reaching health service - Industrial Medicine and Surgery. Excerpt from The Journal of Industrial Hygiene, Vol. 2: May, 1920-April 1921 The three fields of public, social, and in dividual practice in psychiatry are thus well logically in mind in Massachusetts, as indeed they are becoming clear to most other Atlantic seaboard states and to all urbanized communities that have faithfully undertaken the work of mental hygiene on approved lines. Yet some of us, I fear, may still regard this intermediary field of social psychiatry more as a theory than a con dition. Luckily, the men who think prac tice more important than theory are fast dying out or undergoing belated conver sion through reflection on the successes of theory in the Great War. If, however, you actually do meet one of these incorrigible practical men who will see nothing in theory, it is as a rule enough to show him the results of social psychiatric practice among. The relatives of, the victims of neurosyphilis general paresis and the like - to convince him that mental hy giene has unlocked a brilliant and cifica cions novelty for public health in its work upon the se - called syphilis of the inno cent. I make this point about social psychiatric practice somewhat at length, not so much for my present hearers as for others who may read the printed remarks and wonder whether after all there exists a personnel to attack such widely ramifying problems as those of industrial psychiatry. There does exist the appropriate personnel for work in industrial psychiatry. There is, to be sure, not enough such personnel; but there do exist competent workers who can be multiplied as soon as industrialists begin to crave this personnel and as soon as psychiatrists see the peculiar values of the new work. Excerpt from A Reference Manual for the Administrator of an Industrial Hygiene Survey Obtain a list of all industries and service establishments in the area to be surveyed (see paragraph Group these establishments on the basis of the classification used by the United States Census Bureau (see page 61, Public Health Bulletin No. 236, June 1937. Classification included in this manual as Classification of This code is now being used as the basis for all United States industrial surveys. As an aid in classification, refer to the alphabetical list of industries in the 15th Census of the United States (page 33, Industry Index). A copy of this more detailed break-down of the industrial classification, with suggested corrections, has been included under the heading Industry Index. Next decide what industries it is desirable to survey. Dupli cation of studies already done by the Labor Department, Bureau of Mines, etc., should be avoided. Industrial groups which may safely be omitted from the survey are marred with an asterisn in the Classification of Industries. Important: Be sure that industrial grouping is representative and all industries selected for survey are proportionately represented.
