How did Christianity make its remarkable voyage from the Roman Mediterranean to the Indian subcontinent? By examining the social networks that connected the ancient and late antique Mediterranean to the Indian Ocean, central Asia, and Iran, this book contemplates the social relations that made such movement possible. It also analyzes how the narrative tradition regarding the apostle Judas Thomas, which originated in Upper Mesopotamia and accredited him with evangelizing India, traveled among the social networks of an interconnected late antique world. In this way, the book probes how the Thomas narrative shaped Mediterranean Christian beliefs regarding co-religionists in central Asia and India, impacted local Christian cultures, took shape in a variety of languages, and experienced transformation as it traveled from the Mediterranean to India, and back again.

At the very outset, I wish to clarify that this is not a new work : This WebGuruCool Indological Studies 3 incorporates parts of my work, Encyclopaedia of Indian Coins (Ancient Coins of Northern India up to c 650 AD), a two-volume set, published by Agam Kala Prakashan, Delhi, in 2012. The main object behind undertaking this publication is to make information about the divinities and their symbols, appearing on ancient Indian coins, available to students, who may be interested, but are unable to access the Encyclopaedia. On a more selfish note, it is a sort of an advertisement for the Encyclopaedia. It is hoped that a perusal of this WebGuruCool Indological Studies 3 may whet the appetite of the readers for the Encyclopaedia. For a brief survey of ancient Indian coinage system, I would refer the reader to the Introduction of my Encyclopaedia of Indian Coins (Ancient Coins of Northern India up to c 650 AD) 1, to my Gleanings in Ancient Indian Numismatics, and to my joint work with Professor K K Thaplyal, Coins of Ancient India. In the Dictionary proper, the divinites and their symbols, occurring on ancient Indian coins, have been arranged in an alphabetical order. The Select Bibliography begins at page number 195. The contributions to this book address a series of ‘confrontations’—debates between intellectual communities, the interplay of texts and images, and the intersection of monumental architecture and physical terrain—and explore the ways in which the legacy of these encounters, and the human responses to them, conditioned cultural production in early South Asia (c. 4th-7th centuries CE). Rather than an agonistic term, the book uses ‘confrontation’ as a heuristic to examine historical moments within this pivotal period in which individuals and communities were confronted with new ideas and material expressions. The first half of the volume addresses the intersections of textual, material, and visual forms of cultural production by focusing on three primary modes of confrontation: the relation of inscribed texts to material media, the visual articulation of literary images and, finally, the literary interpretation and reception of built landscapes. The second part of the volume focuses on confrontations both within and between intellectual communities. The articles address the dynamics between peripheral and dominant movements in the history of Indian philosophy.
