Our knowledge of reproductive medicine has expanded rapidly since the birth of Louise Brown, the first baby to be conceived by in vitro fertilization, which was performed by Professors Patrick Steptoe and Bob Edwards in Oldham, Eng land, in 1978. Hardly a year goes by without the development of a new or a modification of an existing method of assisted reproduction. Within a relatively short period, in vitro fertilization has been introduced into the treatment of female infertility. Intracytoplasmic sperm injection has also created new opportunities for the treatment of male infertility. The first edition of this book was published in 1996. In the second edition most of the chapters have been updated and additional interest is focused on intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) in view of the risk of malformations in newborns. This manual addresses the techniques of assisted reproduction that are avail able today. Competent authors from various centers present, in a concise way, their tried-and-tested procedures, so that the latter can be readily implemented. Due to different legal regulations, the scope of assisted reproduction is much more limited in Germany than in many other countries. For example, whereas only three embryos may be created and transferred in Germany, such restric tions do not exist in several other European countries and the United States. Furthermore, heterologous fertilization, oocyte donation, and surrogate mother hood are banned in Germany.

This is the 1st edition of the book A Workbook on Human Spermatozoa and Assisted Conception. The text is comprehensive, updated and fully revised as per the present day requirements in the subject of assisted conception. The book has 17 chapters classified into twelve sections. The first chapter deals with equipments and culture media used in semen analysis. Subsequent two chapters are computer assisted semen analysis which provides a comprehensive description of human semen analysis with the help of well-illustrated diagrams in a user friendly language. A sound foundation of understanding of sperm morphology and semen preparation is provided in the next three chapters giving details of semen ejaculate, semen extract and semen preparation of infected semen sample in simple text and easy to understand illustrations along with recent advances. Oxidative stress test is described in chapter 10. The chapter 11 to 14 deal with different tests done on sperms. Chapter fifteen describes Oocyte spindle imaging system. Featuring more than 300 full-color photographs, this atlas is a comprehensive guide to the complex procedures used in assisted reproduction. It shows readers how to utilize the latest technologies and correlates the laboratory and clinical components of assisted reproduction. The book depicts oocytes, embryos, and blastocysts at various stages of division and offers guidelines for assessing oocytes and embryos. The authors give detailed instructions on ovarian stimulation, intracytoplasmic sperm injection, assisted hatching, cryopreservation, extended in vitro culturing, preimplantation genetic diagnosis, and embryo transfer techniques. Close attention is also given to assessment of oocytes and embryos from patients with endometriosis and other pathologies.

This atlas provides ultrastructural morphological images of human spermatozoa. Sperm morphology plays an essential role in sperm-oocyte interactions and early embryonic development, and human sperm ultrastructural morphology offers a valuable reference tool for assessing certain etiologies of male infertility and reproductive failure. However, the ultrastructural morphology of human sperm has not been systematically evaluated or thoroughly described in the literature. Using 470 original and unpublished images, the book shows various ultrastructural morphological phenotypes; defects of the sperm head, neck, middle piece, principal piece, and terminal piece; as well as artefacts of sperm ultrastructural morphology and phenomena related to inadequate preparation, demonstrating many sperm phenotypes and surface structural appearances for the first time. As such, it helps researchers and practitioners in andrology, reproductive medicine, and reproductive pathology gain a better understanding of human sperm ultrastructural morphology.

"Not everything in medical science has a clear beginning. The first realization of infertility and putative remedies remain shrouded in contextual history, but likely goes back to the dawn of our species, well before there was a written record. Childlessness was, and is still, considered a burden in some communities"--

Non-Invasive Sperm Selection for In Vitro Fertilization summarizes and discusses the relevant literature on the various advanced sperm selection methods used in modern Assisted Reproductive Technologies (ART). Chapters review some of the major unresolved issues in the field, the feasibility and success of the various sperm selection methods, their safety and the effects they have on sperm quality and ART outcomes. The book makes recommendations on clinical applications and future research, while helping to elucidate the benefits and promise of non-invasive sperm selection techniques. A distinguished team of scientists, embryologists, and urologists, with expertise in male infertility and ART, contributes to this original and valuable reference guide meant for academics, researchers, and professionals in the field of reproductive medicine who need an update on the current status of the study and practice of non-invasive sperm selection techniques.
