Hull Rifles looks at the 4th East Yorkshire Regiment during the Great War and examines the origins of the battalion and its history over the three years it fought in France and Belgium. The battalion was involved in some of the bloodiest battles of the war and suffered such high casualty rates in early 1918 that the unit ceased to exist, except in name. The men of the original battalion were Territorials, part-time soldiers who gave their free time to provide home defense during a war. Officially formed on 1 April 1908 as a result of the Haldane changes, the unit could trace its history back hundreds of years and was one of the oldest in the country. All the men were volunteers and held a full-time job. They had committed themselves to regular weekly training and a camp in the summer where they practised large-scale manoeuvres with other units. When the call came to volunteer for overseas service, 80 per cent came forward. Their ranks were quickly filled with new volunteers who were prepared to fight abroad. Volunteer numbers were high and quickly the overseas battalion was at full strength, as was a second for home service. A third battalion was also formed to provide replacements for the men at the Front. As well as fighting on the Western Front, a battalion was sent to guard Bermuda for the duration. The text uses letters, newspaper cuttings and the war diary to provide a detailed picture of a typical Territorial battalion at war. Also included are many previously unseen photographs, a nominal list of the men who volunteered before Christmas 1915, including a convicted murderer, awards, casualty details and lists of officers.

In his day, Gen. Benjamin S. Roberts was better known as a U.S. Army combat commander than as a firearms inventor. Yet as an inventor he saw commercial success with his idea for converting muzzle-loading muskets into efficient breechloaders. This is the story of his efforts, beginning in 1859, to develop the ultimate breechloader - efforts that would lead to his successful design in 1866. He also achieved success with his patented design for cartridges. This book provides collectors and arms historians with extensive new information on the production and international use of the Roberts breechloader and its cartridges. "I highly recommend Roberts Breechloading Firearms as a significant work on a little-known weapons system of the Civil War and post-war years. This book is well researched, well written and well illustrated, and can be appreciated by those who enjoy reading about the history and development of American weaponry...The author is a recognized authority on the development of American firearms during the mid-19th Century, having researched and written several important books and numerous articles." Roy Marcot, Arms Historian and author of Spencer Repeating Firearms and Remington: America's Oldest Gunmaker "This new monograph from Ed Hull is a masterful description....Ed Hull is known for his painstaking and extensive research in obscure and hard to find sources to piece together the story of various small arms systems that have passed into history. He has certainly accomplished it again with Robert's Breechloading Firearms." Joe Poyer, author of The American Krag Rifle and Carbine and The .45-70 Springfield "Prominent and provably diligent researcher Edward Hull has once again written a good book...(on) breechloading cartridge arms. Author Hull has been researching this topic for over 10 years and...his research is first rate and his documentation rock solid. This book is very well footnoted and will probably be considered the final word on Benjamin Roberts and his inventions. It would make for a wonderful addition to the library of the arms collector...." Frank Graves, Arms Heritage magazine "Drawing on a variety of historical sources, Hull weaves a compelling history of the process and fully documents the developmental sequencing of General Roberts' design...The end result has been the creation of a truly excellent monograph about the inventor, his work and the structural brilliance of his design. "Through clearly written technical descriptions of the various designs...and most especially by the incorporation of illusgrations showing their salient features, collectors are well served b Hull's work. As such it must be recommended to anyone interested in the American firearms industry of the technical development of arms in general." Herb Houze, Man-At-Arms magazine

“This outstanding book will be essential for future studies of naval policy in the period between la Gloire and the Great War.” —The Naval Review This book is the first comprehensive listing in English of more than 1400 warships that were added to the official French navy fleet list between 1 January 1859 and World War I. It includes everything from the largest battleships to a small armoured gunboat that looked like a floating egg. Reflecting the main phases of naval policy, the ships are listed in three separate parts to keep contemporary designs together and then by ship type and class. For each class the book provides a design history explaining why the ships were built, substantial technical characteristics for the ships as completed and after major reconstructions, and selected career milestones including the ultimate fate of each ship. Following the earlier volumes written jointly with Rif Winfield, French Warships in the Age of Sail 1626–1786 and French Warships in the Age of Sail 1786–1861, this trilogy now provides a complete picture of the development of French warships over a period of almost three centuries. “As a technical reference on the French ships of 1859 to 1914, this book is a must for the serious naval architecture student, modeler, or enthusiast. So much solid information is packed in this book, arranged logically, clearly and with so many illustrations, I cannot see where another volume on this subject can compete. Highly recommended!” —Nautical Research Journal “Superlatives abound in describing this book, arguably the finest naval ‘shiplist’ ever created.” —Warship International
