Excerpt from Horticulture for Schools This book is intended as a text-book of horticulture for high-schools and for other schools requiring a text for pupils of high-school grade, and also for use in homes and reading courses. The subject-matter and exercises may be covered in one school year if three periods a week are spent in recitation and two double periods are employed for laboratory work. When a shorter period is given to the subject, it will be advisable to omit the chapters of least importance to the community. It is not necessary that the chapters be studied in the order given in the text. The teacher should assign them in the order suggested by the climate, season, and needs Of the locality. It is advisable, however, to take up chapters I and II' before other subject-matter is considered, because an understanding Of the material contained therein will result in a more thorough appreciation of the chapters following. Excerpt from School Gardening IN the curriculum of the rural, the provincial, or even the urban school, there is no more delightful subject than that which is treated of in the following pages. It is a subject that introduces the scholar to the possibilities of the soil and to those physical forces that in days past have built up our national wealth; it brings him into contact with the agencies of Nature whereby the plant is induced to yield its contribution to the dietary of the human race. There is no more fascinating work for boys who in their small gardens learn by seeing and doing. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from School Gardening: With a Guide to Horticulture During my connection with the technical side of gardening - lecturing, teaching, and supervising school gardens - I have frequently been appealed to, by teachers and others, for a book dealing with school gardens, giving brief cultural details, plans of cropping, lists of different groups of plants, etc, together with the notes of my lectures to teachers attending the courses in School Gardening and Rural Knowledge at the West of Scotland Agricultural College Farm, Kilmarnock, and other centres. This book is the result of these appeals, and, in attempt ing to meet the requirements of those seeking information on the subject, I have experienced considerable difficulty, not in obtaining material, but in condensing the matter sufficiently to bring it within reasonable limits. Excerpt from Agronomy: A Course in Practical Gardening for High Schools Every effort should be made to have the student secure first-hand information. A single visit to an implement store, for instance, will give him more information of real value than hours of recitation about implements which he has never seen or examined. For the same reason frequent field trips to parks, market gardens, nurseries, greenhouses, public gar dens, and the like should be made. These trips should, if possible, be taken in the hours allotted to agronomy in the school day and should be counted as part of the regular work. In many cases the period for this study may come last in the day's program, thus allowing pupils to take as much additional time for the work after school as they desire. There is always a tendency on the part of the teacher to assume more knowledge of familiar things than the student possesses, and for this reason it is well to carry out all the exercises suggested, though at first glance some may appear too simple to be worth while.
