Changes in the nation, effected by the introduction, progress and triumphs of Christianity, constitute the sum of Sandwich Islands' History. This fact, to the mind both of the christian and the philosopher, gives to the history most of its interest. Excerpt from History and General Views of the Sandwich Islands Mission The lectures were very imperfectlv prepare ed. In the autumn the approaching cold made it necessary for me to go South. At the various cities of the South I found a desire to hear respecting the Sandwich Is lands' mission. 1 therefore lectured, in some places more, and in other places less - at Baltimore, Fayetteville, N. C.; Columbia and Charleston, S. C.; Augusta, Ga; Montgomery and Mobile, Aa.; New 0rd leans and Natchez. In compliance with this re quest, which I could not deny after the unbounded hospitality and true kindness which I at all places received, and with the. Excerpt from The Sandwich Island as They Are, Not as They Should Be My only excuse for giving these hasty sketches to the public must be, the thousand questions I am daily asked regarding the Sandwich Islands, since my return from them, and the general desire manifested by the community, just at this time, to know something definite of their past and present history. I have been stimulated also by a sense of duty to society, to expose the monstrous deception which has so long imposed upon the world, and especially upon those whose truthfulness and purity would prevent a suspicion of duplicity in others. At least, I trust an investigation may be the result of these developments, which ought long since to have been made by a bolder and more skilful hand than my own. Excerpt from The Past and Present of the Sandwich Islands: Being a Series of Lectures, to the First Congregational Church, San Francisco Tar. Early history of the Pacific Islands will always be involved in obscurity. With no written language, the early inhabitants of those groups handed down no records of their times, except the songs of their bards. They built no pyramids. They left no hieroglyphics. In chants only one generation caught the stoq of the past from the lips of another, and so transmitted the great facts of their chiefs and tribes from age to age.
