Excerpt from Beyond the Stained Glass: A Living History of First Baptist Church, Shelby, North Carolina; 160 Years on Mission Together, 1847-2007 Any project of this magnitude requires many people to complete it. The desire to write First Baptist Church history from 196942007 was greater than our knowledge of how to accomplish it. With many minds working together we have seen our goal accomplished. First, our gratitude goes to Charles Deweese, former executive director of Baptist History and Heritage Society in Brentwood, Tennessee, who came at our request to inform us of what is involved in writing and publishing a history. Even though we realized what was involved in time, money, and writing ability, the Ad Hoc History Writing committee along with the Historian and the Heritage Team decided to proceed. The work began to take shape when J. A. West, retired attorney, newspaper columnist, and member of First Baptist Church, agreed to be the writer. Becky Hamrick and Polly Causby, retired English teachers, agreed to edit and proofread. J. A. Did a mammoth job working long hours to bring life to cold facts. The committee had been advised that a writer for a work of this magnitude would cost thousands of dollars. But J. A. Offered to do the task pro hono. His wife Evelyn gave up her sun porch for his office. For weeks she stepped over stacks of paper that were not to be touched. For her help and patience goes a big thank you. Our wealth of tomorrow depends upon our deposits today. Yesterday we lived in anticipa tion of tomorrow-a tomorrow with adequate buildings and people and ministry. While we may be tempted to live on yesterday's dreams which have become today's realities, let us shun the temptation and move forward and upward upon the rungs of the great spiritual ladder which our great Creator has placed before us.
