Excerpt from Historical Sketches of the Colleges of Wisconsin In Wisconsin, as elsewhere in our country, the earliest institutions for higher education originated with Christian churches of different names. However complete may be the organization of public instruction under state authority, there will always be place and demand for distinctively Christian colleges to infuse into the body politic some positive religious influence in connection with the processes of education. This has been recognized in our state by the readiness of the legislature to grant liberal charters for such institutions, and to extend to them the fostering care and protection of the laws. The accompanying sketches have been prepared at the several institutions in accordance with a resolution of the Wisconsin State Teachers' Association, and are published under the direction of the State Superintendent of Public Instruction, to be presented at the National Centennial Exposition, as one phase of the work of education sustained in Wisconsin. Excerpt from Historical Sketch of Education in Wisconsin The object of this work is to present to the National Centennial of our country, for 1876, an account of the origin and development of the educational system in Wisconsin. Though the state is comparatively young, it has taken an advanced position in fostering its public schools and its state institutions of learning. The academies and denominational colleges, while not immediately connected with our educational system, have performed valuable work for the state. The school system has been traced to its sources in the earliest movements in Wisconsin; and the successive stages of its growth, during the territorial government and under the state organization, have been carefully noticed. The materials of this history have been obtained from documents issued by the different state departments, from an examination of many of the places mentioned, from interviews and correspondence with the early pioneers, and from the personal recollections of the author. For forty years, this widely acclaimed classic has remained unsurpassed as an introduction to art in the Western world, boasting the matchless credibility of the Janson name. This newest update features a more contemporary, more colorful design and vast array of extraordinarily produced illustrations that have become the Janson hallmark. A narrative voice makes this book a truly enjoyable read, and carefully reviewed and revised updates to this edition offer the utmost clarity in contributions based on recent scholarship. Extensive captions for the book’s incredible art program offer profound insight through the eyes of twentieth-century art historians speaking about specific pieces of art featured throughout. Significantly changed in this edition is the chapter on “The Late Renaissance,” in which Janson offers a new perspective on the subject, tracing in detail the religious art tied to the Catholic Reform movement, whose early history is little known to many readers of art history. Janson has also rearranged early Renaissance art according to genres instead of time sequence, and he has followed the reinterpretation of Etruscan art begun in recent years by German and English art historians. With a truly humanist approach, this book gives written and visual meaning to the captivating story of what artists have tried to express—and why—for more than 30,000 years.

This book delineates how Thornton Wilder (1897–1975), a learned playwright and novelist, embeds himself within the classical tradition, integrating Greek and Roman motifs with a wide range of sources to produce heart-breaking masterpieces such as Our Town and comedy sensations such as Dolly Levi. Through this study of archival sources and close reading, readers will understand Wilder’s avant-garde staging and innovative time sequences not as a break with the past, but as a response to the classics. The author traces the genesis of unforgettable characters like Dolly Levi in The Matchmaker, Emily Webb in Our Town, and George Antrobus in The Skin of Our Teeth. Vergil’s expression, "Here are the tears of the world, and human matters touch the heart" haunts Wilder’s oeuvre. Understanding Vergil’s phrase as "tears for the beauty of the world," Wilder utilizes scenes depicting the beauty of the world and the sorrow when individuals recognize this too late. Wilder exhorts us to observe lovingly, alert to the wonder of the everyday. This work will appeal to actors and directors, professors and students in classics and in American literature, those fascinated by modern drama and performance studies, and non-specialists, theatre-goers, and readers in the general public.
