Excerpt from Historical Sketch of Shawnee County, Kansas: Prepared for the Occasion of the Centennial Celebration, July 4, 1876 The author of the following historical sketch would say, as an apology to the community and as a justification of himself, that the time allowed for its preparation - about ten days - was not sufficient, after attending to the usual calls of business, to do more than is here presented. A recollection of this fact is also urged in mitigation for errors or omissions that may be noticed. Thoughts were entertained of preparing a synoptical sketch, extending through the period of the county's existence, but it was concluded that a consecutive narrative, reasonably full of details, would be more satisfactory - especially to the older settlers of the county - and be more valuable as a basis for future historical work.
