The Indiana 26th Infantry Regiment was organized at Indianapolis and was mustered in Aug. 31, 1861. It left the state Sept. 7, and reported at St. Louis, where it joined Fremont's forces in the campaign to Springfield. It returned to Sedalia and engaged in railroad guard duty until July, 1862, when it moved with the army into southern Missouri, engaging in the battles at Newtonia, Prairie Grove, Ark., and Van Buren.The 26th was then engaged in the siege of Vicksburg, Afterwards, it went up the Yazoo river in July, recaptured Yazoo City, was stationed at Port Hudson after its surrender, and subsequently at Carrolton, La. The regiment was engaged at Stirling's Plantation, near Morganza, where it was defeated and had almost half its force captured, the prisoners being taken to Tyler, Tex., and held for many months.The regiment reenlisted Feb. 1, 1864, and was on a furlough during April. It returned to the field in Louisiana on June 1, and was assigned to garrison duty at Fort Butler, where it remained until the spring of 1865. On Feb. 18, 1865, the recruits of the 60th regiment were transferred to the 26th, and the regiment was ordered to Mobile in March as part of the 16th corps, participating in the siege and assault upon Spanish Fort. The Indiana 129th Infantry regiment was organized during the winter of 1863-64, at Michigan City and was mustered in March 1. It left the state on the 30th for Nashville, where it was assigned to the 2nd brigade, 1st division, 23d corps. On April 24 it reached Charleston, Tenn., and moved from there on May 3 to take part in the movement toward Atlanta. The Indiana 53rd Infantry Regiment was orga-nized at New Albany in January and February 1862. It participated in the Siege of Corinth, then Vicksburg. It joined Sherman for the Georgia Campaign and Acworth in the spring of 1864, then participated in the March to the Sea and the Carolina's Campaign. Following the surrender of the Confederate troops, the 53rd went to Washington, DC., and was mustered out in July of 1865. The Indiana 38th Infantry Regiment was organized at New Albany, Indiana, and mustered in September 18, 1861. It spent the early part of the War in central Tennessee, missing the battles preceding and including Vicksburg, but were actively engaged in the pursuit of General Bragg, the Battle of Perryville and the Battle of Stone's River. It then joined the 14th Army Corps and fought at Chickamauga, the Atlanta Campaign, the March to the Sea, and the Carolina's Campaign. It was then ordered to Washington, D. C., via Richmond, Virginia, April 29-May 20 and Grand Review May 24. The regiment moved to Louisville, Kentucky in June, and there mustered out July 15 1865. The Regiment lost during service 9 Officers and 147 Enlisted men killed and mortally wounded and 1 Officer and 254 Enlisted men by disease. Total 411. The Indiana 22nd Infantry Regiment was organized at Madison in July, 1861, and was mustered in at Indianapolis, Aug. 15. On October 8, 1862, at the Battle of Perryville, Kentucky, the regiment suffered 65.3% casualties with 56 killed, one of the highest percentages of casualties suffered by any American Civil War regiment in a single engagement. The 22nd continued throughout the war in the west, participating in the Atlanta and Carolina's Campaigns. The 29th Mississippi Infantry Regiment 29th Infantry Regiment was organized at Corinth, Mississippi, in April, 1862 with men from Grenada, Lafayette, Panola, Yalobusha, Washington, and De Soto counties. The unit served in Mississippi, then moved to Kentucky where it saw action in Munfordville. Later it joined the Army of Tennessee and was placed in General Walthall's and Brantly's Brigade where it participated in many battles from Murfreesboro to Bentonville. The 29th lost 5 killed and 36 wounded at Munfordville, had 34 killed and 202 wounded at Murfreesboro, and suffered fifty-three percent disabled of the 364 engaged at Chickamauga. It reported 191 casualties at Chattanooga and in December, 1863 was consolidated with the 30th and 34th Regiment and totalled 554 men and 339 arms. This unit reported 5 killed and 22 wounded at Resaca, and in the fight at Ezra Church the 29th/30th lost 8 killed and 20 wounded. Very few surrendered in North Carolina in April, 1865.
