Im Rahmen des interdisziplinaren NFN-Forschungsprojekts CHWH (Cultural History of the Western Himalaya from the 8th Century CE), an dem sich verschiedene Institute der Universitat Wien und der OAW beteiligt haben (siehe http: //www.univie.ac.at/chwh), wurde am Institut fur Geographie und Regionalforschung der Universitat Wien diese topographische Ubersichtskarte des indischen Bundesstaates Himachal Pradesh im Massstab 1: 500.000 angefertigt. Im selben Stil wurde auch die nordlich an Himachal Pradesh grenzende Region Ladakh kartographiert. Beide Karten haben u. a. die Aufgabe, Fachwissenschaftler bei ihrer Tatigkeit vor Ort und im Rahmen von Forschungen in diesen Gebieten zu unterstutzen. Dabei zahlen diese Kartenpublikationen gegenwartig zu den wenigen Produkten am Markt, die diesen sehr geschichtstrachtigen und kulturhistorisch wichtigen, aber gleichzeitig politisch sensiblen Teil der Erde kartographisch sehr ausgewogen abbilden. Die Nutzung ist daher allen Interessierten und Reisenden ans Herz gelegt. Neben samtlichen fur die Orientierung wichtigen Karteninhalten wie Ortschaften, Strassen-, Gewasser- und Gradnetz, administrativen Grenzen und Hoheninformationen unterschiedlicher Art werden auch ausgewahlte kulturhistorisch relevante Monumente wie Palaste, Tempel, Kloster und Moscheen dargestellt. Neben diesen beiden gedruckten Karten wurde im Rahmen des Subprojekts CHIS (Cultural History Information System) auch eine kartographische Web-Applikation erstellt, in welcher die verschiedenen Forschungsobjekte visualisiert und ein umfassendes Kartenarchiv sowie Spezialansichten der Kloster Nako und Tabo zur Verfugung gestellt werden (siehe http: //pro.geo.univie.ac.at/projects/chis).
