DOWNLOAD EBOOKThe Tunnel Engineering Handbook, Second Edition provides, in a single convenient volume, comprehensive coverage of the state of the art in the design, construction, and rehabilitation of tunnels. It brings together essential information on all the principal classifications of tunnels, including soft ground, hard rock, immersed tube and cut-and-cover, with comparisons of their relative advantages and suitability. The broad coverage found in the Tunnel Engineering Handbook enables engineers to address such critical questions as how tunnels are planned and laid out, how the design of tunnels depends on site and ground conditions, and which types of tunnels and construction methods are best suited to different conditions. Written by the leading engineers in the fields, this second edition features major revisions from the first, including: * Complete updating of all chapters from the first edition * Seven completely new chapters covering tunnel stabilization and lining, difficult ground, deep shafts, water conveyance tunnels, small diameter tunnels, fire life safety, tunnel rehabilitation and tunnel construction contracting *New coverage of the modern philosophy and techniques of tunnel design and tunnel construction contracting The comprehensive coverage of the Tunnel Engineering Handbook makes it an essential resource for all practicing engineers engaged in the design of tunnels and underground construction. In addition, the book contains a wealth of information that government administrators and planners and transportation officials will use in the planning and management of tunnels.

DOWNLOAD EBOOKthe book focuses on the designing and running and building of tunnels with regards to their fire safety elements. This is an updated second edition of the book. The book is a specialist design title and is technical, not an overview of the topic but rather in depth. It has some managerial elements within it, in terms of what you will need to know in tunnel fire safety. Spanning the spectrum of current knowledge available in the field of tunnel fire safety, Handbook of Tunnel Fire Safety covers a diverse range of topics. This new edition includes new information on automatic incident detection (AID), fire suppression in tunnels, heat release rates in tunnel fires, new case studies, and all uptodate information on probabilistic modelling and tunnel fires, and tunnel fires and human behaviour. The book will appeal to all concerned with fire safety in tunnels including designers, operators, regulators, emergency services, equipment manufacturers and researchers.

DOWNLOAD EBOOKStructural Design for Fire Safety, 2nd edition Andrew H. Buchanan, University of Canterbury, New Zealand Anthony K. Abu, University of Canterbury, New Zealand A practical and informative guide to structural fire engineering This book presents a comprehensive overview of structural fire engineering. An update on the first edition, the book describes new developments in the past ten years, including advanced calculation methods and computer programs. Further additions include: calculation methods for membrane action in floor slabs exposed to fires; a chapter on composite steel-concrete construction; and case studies of structural collapses. The book begins with an introduction to fire safety in buildings, from fire growth and development to the devastating effects of severe fires on large building structures. Methods of calculating fire severity and fire resistance are then described in detail, together with both simple and advanced methods for assessing and designing for structural fire safety in buildings constructed from structural steel, reinforced concrete, or structural timber. Structural Design for Fire Safety, 2nd edition bridges the information gap between fire safety engineers, structural engineers and building officials, and it will be useful for many others including architects, code writers, building designers, and firefighters. Key features: • Updated references to current research, as well as new end-of-chapter questions and worked examples. •Authors experienced in teaching, researching, and applying structural fire engineering in real buildings. • A focus on basic principles rather than specific building code requirements, for an international audience. An essential guide for structural engineers who wish to improve their understanding of buildings exposed to severe fires and an ideal textbook for introductory or advanced courses in structural fire engineering.

DOWNLOAD EBOOKThese proceedings include papers presented at the International Conference on “Research and Advanced Technology in Fire Safety” FireSafety 2017 which took place at University of Cantabria, Santander, Spain. During last decade, our research group organized several on-day events and, in this sense, the success of this conference is a tribute for that continued effort to exchange knowledge on this discipline between experts from all parts of the world. This congress represents an excellent “agora” for researchers and engineers to present and discuss new and innovative approaches. In addition, this event is a unique opportunity for Spanish-speaker scientific and technological community to receive them from top references. The need for expertise in this field is also increasing in this geographical context.

DOWNLOAD EBOOKThe design, construction, and upkeep of infrastructure is comprised of a multitude of dimensions spanning a highly complex paradigm of interconnected opportunities and challenges. While traditional methods fall short of adequately accounting for such complexity, artificial intelligence (AI) presents novel and out-of-the-box solutions that effectively tackle the growing demands of our infrastructure. The convergence between AI and civil engineering is an emerging frontier with tremendous potential. The book is likely to provide a boost to the state of infrastructure engineering by fostering a new look at civil engineering that capitalizes on AI as its main driver. It highlights the ongoing push to adopt and leverage AI to realize contemporary, intelligent, safe, and resilient infrastructure. The book comprises interdisciplinary and novel works from across the globe. It presents findings from innovative efforts supplemented with physical tests, numerical simulations, and case studies – all of which can be used as benchmarks to carry out future experiments and/or facilitate the development of future AI models in structural engineering, traffic engineering, construction engineering, and construction materials. The book will serve as a guide for a wide range of audiences, including senior undergraduate and graduate students, professionals, and government officials of civil, traffic, and computer engineering backgrounds, as well as for those engaged in urban planning and human sciences.

DOWNLOAD EBOOKThis book aims to cast light on all aspects of tunnel fires, based on experimental activities and theoretical and computational fluid dynamics (CFD) analyses. In particular, the authors describe a transient full-scale fire test (~15 MW), explaining how they designed and performed the experimental activity inside the Morgex North tunnel in Italy. The entire organization of the experiment is described, from preliminary evaluations to the solutions found for management of operational difficulties and safety issues. This fire test allowed the collection of different measurements (temperature, air velocity, smoke composition, pollutant species) useful for validating and improving CFD codes and for testing the real behavior of the tunnel and its safety systems during a diesel oil fire with a significant heat release rate. Finally, the fire dynamics are compared with empirical correlations, CFD simulations, and literature measurements obtained in other similar tunnel fire tests. This book will be of interest to all engineers and public officials who are concerned with the nature, prevention, and management of tunnel fires.
