Excerpt from Handbook of British Rubi The Irish Rubi are still known very imperfectly, though Within the last few years considerable progress has been made in the examination of those growing on the eastern side of the island, and in the Counties Galway, Mayo and Westmeath. Most of our English species have already been found; some of them abundantly. A few forms discovered quite recently are as yet unknown in Great Britain, and this small special list for Ireland seems likely to be somewhat increased within the next ten or twenty years. As far back as 1895 Dr. Focke wrote as follows to the Rev. E. S. Marshall From the geographical position of Ireland and from several botanical facts we may expect to meet with in that country a few species of S. -w. Origin, growing perhaps in the north of Spain or in s.-w. France.' But he added, I suppose most of the unknown Irish Rubi will prove to be local species or varieties, including perhaps a good deal of hybrids.'
