This study explains how the myths of Greece and Rome were transmitted from antiquity to the Renaissance. Luc Brisson argues that philosophy was ironically responsible for saving myth from historical annihilation. Although philosophy was initially critical of myth because it could not be declared true or false and because it was inferior to argumentation, mythology was progressively reincorporated into philosophy through allegorical exegesis. This volume addresses a theme of special significance for Byzantine studies. Byzantium has traditionally been deemed a civilisation which deferred to authority and set special store by orthodoxy, canon and proper order. Since 1982 when the distinguished Russian Byzantinist Alexander Kazhdan wrote that 'the history of Byzantine intellectual opposition has yet to be written', scholars have increasingly highlighted cases of subversion of 'correct practice' and 'correct belief' in Byzantium. This innovative scholarly effort has produced important results, although it has been hampered by the lack of dialogue across the disciplines of Byzantine studies. The 43rd Spring Symposium of Byzantine Studies in 2010 drew together historians, art historians, and scholars of literature, religion and philosophy, who discussed shared and discipline-specific approaches to the theme of subversion. The present volume presents a selection of the papers delivered at the symposium enriched with specially commissioned contributions. Most papers deal with the period after the eleventh century, although early Byzantium is not ignored. The few scraps of information which we have about Flavius Cresconius Corippus come almost exclusively from his two poems, the lohannis and the In laudem lustini Augusti minoris. Despite this he was still the last important Latin author of Late Antiquity. Corippus's poem on the accession of Justin II is considered a most unusual work. Unlike the lohannis, so far as we know the only other product by the same author, it tells of no epic battles against barbarian peoples. Instead we have a narrative poem, covering in great detail the accession of an emperor, the first week of his reign and (in part, for the poem breaks off before the end) his inauguration as consul. This is the first book to utilize or interpret this immensely valuable body of evidence as a whole. Cameron has contributed to one of the most urgent tasks of modern scholars of late antiquity and (still more) of the Byzantine period-the provision of a readable text with translation and commentary of this important work which until now was only available in plain and inadequate editions.
