DOWNLOAD EBOOKThe Geography Markup Language (GML) is a well known XML dialect that offers the ocean observing community a robust and standards based encoding for data exchange. Adaptations of GML are evolving to meet the needs and uses of different communities. Understanding how to use GML to model and exchange observatory time-series data will be critical to building a national data resource from the federation of observatories that form the Integrated Ocean Observing System (IOOS). The NOAA Coastal Services Center conducted an experiment with several nonfederal partners using the GML Simple Features Profile and the Web Feature Service (WFS). An application schema, a content model, a GML dictionary, and a special purpose WFS were used to exchange data between an observatory and a data-assembly center relational database.
