This book is a study of group theoretical properties of two disparate kinds, firstly finiteness conditions or generalizations of finiteness and secondly generalizations of solubility or nilpotence. It will be particularly interesting to discuss groups which possess properties of both types. The origins of the subject may be traced back to the nineteen twenties and thirties and are associated with the names of R. Baer, S.N. Cernikov, K.A. Hirsch, A.G. Kuros, 0.]. Schmidt and H. Wielandt. Since this early period, the body of theory has expanded at an increasingly rapid rate through the efforts of many group theorists, particularly in Germany, Great Britain and the Soviet Union. Some of the highest points attained can, perhaps, be found in the work of P. Hall and A.I. Mal'cev on infinite soluble groups. Kuras's well-known book "The theory of groups" has exercised a strong influence on the development of the theory of infinite groups: this is particularly true of the second edition in its English translation of 1955. To cope with the enormous increase in knowledge since that date, a third volume, containing a survey of the contents of a very large number of papers but without proofs, was added to the book in 1967

This book is a study of group theoretical properties of two disparate kinds, firstly finiteness conditions or generalizations of finiteness, and secondly generalizations of solubility or nilpotence. Particularly interesting are the groups which possess properties of both types. This volume collects the most important results in the theory, to present them in a compact and accessible form with improved and shortened proofs wherever possible. Readers should have a good basic knowledge of group theory, Abelian groups, and the more familiar parts of commutative algebra and ring theory.

Annotation This volume consists of papers presented to the Second International Conference on the Theory of Groups held in Canberra in August 1973 together with areport by the chairman of the Organizing Committee and a collection of problems. The manuscripts were typed by Mrs Geary, the bulk of the bibliographie work was done by Mrs Pinkerton, and a number of colleagues helped with proof-reading; Professor Neumann, Drs Cossey, Kovacs, MeDougall, Praeger, Pride, Rangaswamy and Stewart. This volume mainly focuses on various comprehensive topological theories, with the exception of a paper on combinatorial topology versus point-set topology by I.M. James and a paper on the history of the normal Moore space problem by P. Nyikos. The history of the following theories is given: pointfree topology, locale and frame theory (P. Johnstone), non-symmetric distances in topology (H.-P. Künzi), categorical topology and topological constructs (E. Lowen-Colebunders and B. Lowen), topological groups (M. G. Tkacenko) and finally shape theory (S. Mardesic and J. Segal). Together with the first two volumes, this work focuses on the history of topology, in all its aspects. It is unique and presents important views and insights into the problems and development of topological theories and applications of topological concepts, and into the life and work of topologists. As such, it will encourage not only further study in the history of the subject, but also further mathematical research in the field. It is an invaluable tool for topology researchers and topology teachers throughout the mathematical world.

A co-publication of the AMS and Bar-Ilan University This volume contains the proceedings of the Research Workshop of the Israel Science Foundation on Groups, Algebras and Identities, held from March 20–24, 2016, at Bar-Ilan University and The Hebrew University of Jerusalem, Israel, in honor of Boris Plotkin's 90th birthday. The papers in this volume cover various topics of universal algebra, universal algebraic geometry, logic geometry, and algebraic logic, as well as applications of universal algebra to computer science, geometric ring theory, small cancellation theory, and Boolean algebras.
