DOWNLOAD EBOOKManagement controls on prescribing have greater impact on a GP's freedom of choice than on any other matter requiring clinical judgement. However, in order to deliver the most effective patient care, the GP needs a much broader base of knowledge including, for example, an understanding of basic pharmacological principles and the process of conducting clinical trials. This book deals systematically with the practical aspects of prescribing throughout primary care. It provides the busy GP with readily-accessible information so that the benefit to patients and the pratice can be maximized.

Divided into three sections, this text first looks at the consultation with the patient, and outlines legal, professional and ethical frameworks which guide medical and non-medical prescribing. The second section is devoted to evidence-based practice, highlighting key skills essential to all clinicians. This section encourages the student to identify why evidence-based practice should underpin prescribing decisions. The third and final section is concerned with pharmacology. The student is introduced to basic concepts of pharmacodynamics and pharmacokinetics, adverse drug reactions and variability of response. The importance of these pharmacological principles is highlighted throughout the subsequent discussion of drug groups affecting major body systems. Key features: Pulls together all key elements of prescribing using an integrated approach ‘Stop and Think' boxes and practice application activities provided throughout, enabling the reader to link theory to practice Key terms and glossary provided This text is invaluable for all nursing, health and medical students taking courses in prescribing and pharmacology.

DOWNLOAD EBOOKThe hands-on guide to practical prescribing is a concise, easy-to-use guide to the practical aspects of pharmacology for junior doctors who are making the transition from studying pharmacology to prescribing drugs for the first time. This new addition to 'The hands-on guide' series brings together the core pharmacological knowledge required by house officers, structured in a way to address the very hands-on, practical aspects of prescribing. This book is not designed to replace the factual drug information in the BNF, but to complement and build upon it, so that The hands-on guide to practical prescribing provides junior doctors with a solid guide to prescribing in the clinical setting. Beginning with the general principles of prescribing and basics of writing a prescription form, the book guides you through topics such as using the BNF, drug interactions and monitoring toxicity, before moving on to cover both surgical and medical topics such as preoperative and postoperative patients, prophylaxis, organ failure and diabetes. The hands-on guide to practical prescribing is a problem-based book that covers the common problems and questions a house officer might encounter, and will be an invaluable guide to life on the wards. The authors are specialist registrars in medicine and surgery, have undertaken SHO and registrar posts in the major specialities and also write and teach regularly on clinical pharmacology.

DOWNLOAD EBOOKThis User’s Guide is intended to support the design, implementation, analysis, interpretation, and quality evaluation of registries created to increase understanding of patient outcomes. For the purposes of this guide, a patient registry is an organized system that uses observational study methods to collect uniform data (clinical and other) to evaluate specified outcomes for a population defined by a particular disease, condition, or exposure, and that serves one or more predetermined scientific, clinical, or policy purposes. A registry database is a file (or files) derived from the registry. Although registries can serve many purposes, this guide focuses on registries created for one or more of the following purposes: to describe the natural history of disease, to determine clinical effectiveness or cost-effectiveness of health care products and services, to measure or monitor safety and harm, and/or to measure quality of care. Registries are classified according to how their populations are defined. For example, product registries include patients who have been exposed to biopharmaceutical products or medical devices. Health services registries consist of patients who have had a common procedure, clinical encounter, or hospitalization. Disease or condition registries are defined by patients having the same diagnosis, such as cystic fibrosis or heart failure. The User’s Guide was created by researchers affiliated with AHRQ’s Effective Health Care Program, particularly those who participated in AHRQ’s DEcIDE (Developing Evidence to Inform Decisions About Effectiveness) program. Chapters were subject to multiple internal and external independent reviews.
