This book explores several aspects of the research in the field of general anesthesia, including mechanisms of action of inhaled and intravenous hypnotic agents; the anesthetics-induced neurotoxicity in children and elderly; features and physiopathology of postoperative cognitive side effects; and findings from preclinical research focused on the recognition of potential links between anesthetics and cancer cell biology. Furthermore, chapters in this book cover technical topics such as preoperative monitoring of autonomic nervous activity; EEG based monitoring of general anesthesia; monitoring cerebral oximetry by near infrared spectroscopy; pharmacological issues of anesthesia interest; and optimization of perioperative course through the latest techniques such as the opioid-free anesthesia. Finally, this book offers a comprehensive and up-to-date discussion on the phenomenon of general anesthesia awareness and its potential psychological sequelae. In Neuromethods series style, chapters include the kind of detail and key advice from the specialists needed to get successful results in your laboratory. Cutting-edge and comprehensive, General Anesthesia Research is a valuable resource for novice and expert anesthesiologists who want to learn more about the important advances made in this developing field.

50 Studies Every Anesthesiologist Should Know presents key studies that have shaped the practice of anesthesiology. Selected using a rigorous methodology, the studies cover topics ranging from pain medicine, critical care, cardiothoracic anesthesiology to general anesthesiology. For each study, a concise summary is presented with an emphasis on the results and limitations of the study, and its implications for practice. Brief information on other relevant studies is provided, and an illustrative clinical case concludes the review. This book is a must-read for health care professionals in anesthesiology and pain medicine, and anyone who wants to learn more about the data behind clinical practice in anesthesiology, pain medicine, critical care and its broad subspecialties.

General anesthesia is a standard medical procedure in today's hospital practice. Although in most cases the administration of anesthetics does not affect severely the patients health, side effects of anesthesia are well-known, such as nausea or cognitive impairment. Moreover 1-2 out of 1000 patients under surgery report a partial wake up from anesthesia during the operation. The reason for such a partial lack of control of depth of anesthesia is that medical procedures are highly optimized based on experience but the neural dynamics during general anesthesia is far from being understood. One reason for this lack of understanding is both the complex neural interactions of neurons on different spatial and temporal scales and the poorly understood action of anesthetics on neural populations. For instance, anesthetic agents act on synaptic receptors on a microscopic scale essentially evoking a macroscopic change of population activity, such as Local Field Potentials, EEG/MEG or resulting change of cerebral blood flow. This population effect then triggers the loss of consciousness in patients. This Research Topic aims to address recent theoretical and experimental advances in the field. The theoretical and experimental studies represent a good overview over the current state of research in the field and provides a deeper insight into the underlying neural mechanisms. Each article in the issue focusses on a specific current research topic in general anesthesia research and several articles introduce to the topic in a pedagogical way. The issue covers various types of anaesthesia and the most important topics in the field, such as (but not limited to) recent advances in theoretical models and states of consciousness reflected in experimental data, the connectivity changes observed during anesthesia or effects of specific drugs on brain activity. The introduction style of the papers facilitates the reader to understand the background of the research aspect and even allows readers not familiar with general anesthesia research to enter the research domain. Hence the Research Topic aims to provide on one hand an overview of the current state of the art and on the other hand a good starting point for new researchers in the field.

The clinical practice of anesthesia has undergone many advances in the past few years, making this the perfect time for a new state-of-the-art anesthesia textbook for practitioners and trainees. The goal of this book is to provide a modern, clinically focused textbook giving rapid access to comprehensive, succinct knowledge from experts in the field. All clinical topics of relevance to anesthesiology are organized into 29 sections consisting of more than 180 chapters. The print version contains 166 chapters that cover all of the essential clinical topics, while an additional 17 chapters on subjects of interest to the more advanced practitioner can be freely accessed at www.cambridge.org/vacanti. Newer techniques such as ultrasound nerve blocks, robotic surgery and transesophageal echocardiography are included, and numerous illustrations and tables assist the reader in rapidly assimilating key information. This authoritative text is edited by distinguished Harvard Medical School faculty, with contributors from many of the leading academic anesthesiology departments in the United States and an introduction from Dr S. R. Mallampati. This book is your essential companion when preparing for board review and recertification exams and in your daily clinical practice.

Anaesthesia has traditionally meant the condition of having sensation (including the feeling of pain) blocked or temporarily taken away. This allows patients to undergo surgery and other procedures without the distress and pain they would otherwise experience. General anaesthesia can depress ventilation, determining variations in pulmonary mechanics and alteration of gas exchange, often related to underlying anatomical and physiological status. The authors of this book describe the mechanisms responsible for the impairment of intraoperative respiratory function and discuss several aspects of mechanical ventilation that can be employed to improve patients' outcome. Furthermore, the administration of IV fluid is a part of carrying out a good anaesthesia. This book examines whether perioperative fluid management could change the outcome for patients undergoing procedures involving anaesthesia. The possible extra-cardiac indications of beta-blockers during the perioperative period is explored as well. Other chapters in this book examine the effect of high remifentanil doses in patients with brain tumours, the use of multivariable fuzzy logic and self-organising fuzzy logic controller structure to control anaesthesia, the different modalities of anaesthesia techniques for gastrointestinal diagnostic procedures performed in children, and an analysis of the poly-alert system for cardiovascular changes during anaesthesia.
