The war on terrorism has made physical security for federal facilities a governmentwide concern. The Interagency Security Committee (ISC), which is chaired by the Dept. of Homeland Security (DHS), is tasked with coordinating federal agencies' facility protection efforts, developing protection standards, & overseeing implementation. This report: (1) assesses ISC's progress in fulfilling its responsibilities & (2) identifies key practices in protecting federal facilities & any related implementation obstacles. There is ongoing concern about the security of federal buildings and their occupants. The Federal Protective Service (FPS) within the Dept. of Homeland Security is responsible for providing law enforcement and related security services for nearly 9,000 federal buildings under the control and custody of the General Services Admin. (GSA). In 2004, a set of key protection practices from the collective practices of federal agencies and the private sector was identified that included: allocating resources using risk management, leveraging technology, and information sharing and coordination. This report determined whether FPS's security efforts for GSA buildings reflected key practices. Includes recommendations. Illustrations.
Although each main-set volume of Terrorism: 1st Series contains its own volume-specific index, this comprehensive Index places all the Index info from the last fifty main-set volumes into one index volume. Furthermore, the volume-specific indexes are only subject indexes, whereas five different indexes appear within this one comprehensive index: the subject index, an index organized according to the title of the document, an index based on the name of the document's author, an index correlated to the document's year, and a subject-by-year index. This one all-encompassing Index thus provides users with multiple ways to conduct research into four years' worth of Terrorism: 1st Series volumes.
Volume 112 of Terrorism: Commentary on Security Documents, Discerning President Obama's National Defense Strategy, makes available documents from the first fifteen months of the Obama administration that provide insights into its developing national defense strategy. Included are documents specifically relating to the U.S. Department of Defense and the nation's armed forces. Included is the February 2010 Quadrennial Defense Review Report of the Department of Defense, one of the most significant documents providing insight into the defense component of national security. General Editor Douglas Lovelace, an expert in U.S. military matters, elucidates the complexities of military spending and of counter-insurgency tactics. Also included are reports detailing the strategy and performance of government agencies involved in the security effort, such as the Department of Homeland Security. These reports shed light on internal department assessments as well as external evaluations. Finally, strategy documents produced by the U.S. armed forces describe the national security policy being implemented by the nation's senior military leaders.
