This book is devoted to the quickly developing area of high intensity particle beam physics. Beam emittance growth, halo formation and chaotic particle motion are the main areas of research in the new intense particle accelerators. Knowledge of those phenomena is crucial for the design of particle accelerators with space-charge dominated beams. This important book provides a new, self-consistent description of high brightness particle beams with essentially nonlinear space-charge forces. The emphasis is on the proper matching of the beam with focusing and accelerating structures to suppress beam emittance growth and halo formation. The book will be useful for researchers and engineers dealing with space-charge dominated beams and for graduate and undergraduate students who are starting to work in this field.

This meeting gathered nine of the world's leading experts in high energy physics and cosmology. The speakers put forward their ideas about the present status and future of some important aspect of their field of research. Some of the talks are sufficiently general and free of technicality to be accessible to a wide audience.

The monumental discovery of the Higgs boson at the LHC marked the beginning of a new era in the high energy physics. Although the particle spectrum of the Standard Model is now complete with the Higgs boson, the hierarchy problem and the lack of explanation of the origin of dark matter imply that a new Beyond the Standard Model physics should exist. There is however no clear indication (experimental or otherwise) of the energy scale at which this new physics should appear. Current results from the LHC experiments have shown no unpredicted effects up to pp collision energies of 13 TeV. If not observed directly at the LHC, the new physics may reveal itself through deviations of Higgs properties from their Standard Model expectations, or it may become directly accessible only at new, higher-energy accelerator facilities. It is then of primary importance to have a comprehensive review of the available and planned accelerators and their design, physics motivation and expected performance. This book comprises 26 carefully edited articles with well-referenced and up-to-date material written by many of the leading experts. These articles — originated from presentations and dialogues at the second HKUST Institute for Advanced Study Program on High Energy Physics — are organized into three aspects, Theory, Accelerator, and Experiment, focusing on in-depth analyses and technical aspects that are essential for the developments and expectations for the future high energy physics.

This book is the result of a broad-based and in-depth study of high energy physics commissioned by the Executive Committee of the Division of Particles and Fields of the American Physical Society. This year-long study was initiated in the early 1994, in the wake of the cancellation of the SSC, and is meant to complement the report of the Drell HEPAP subpanel, charged with providing a vision for the future of the field. The DPF study of high energy physics was organized on the basis of the working groups, each led by a number of co-conveners chosen among established leaders in the various subspecialties in the field. These conveners, in turn, organized their working groups by inviting other active workers in the discipline to participate and gathered further input from the community by holding a variety of specialized meetings and workshops. This book contains the final reports of the 11 working groups assembled for the study, along with an extended overview and executive summary by the editors.
