Perennially-frozen Angiussaq Lake, Greenland was examined in 1957 to determine the strength of its midsummer ice cover and the causes of its perennially-frozen conditions. The lake, largest within a 100-mi radius of Thule Air Base, is formed by ice-cap damming of a valley 200 m deep, and has an elevation of 590 m. Water temperatures ranged from 0.1 to 0.7 C and showed that summertime mixing is sufficient to maintain nearly isothermal conditions. Fish, phytoplankton, AND CHIRONOMID LIFE WERE FOUND IN THE LAKE WATER. At the end of the 1957 summer, more than 90% of the lake surface was covered by ice averaging 1.5 m in thickness. Variations in melting rate have caused a gently rolling surface that might be smoothed by flooding or scraping. In-place cantilever beam tests showed that the upper half meter of ice had almost no strength but that the lower portion maintained sufficient strength to support heavy loads throughout the summer. A tongue of glacier ice floating in the lake has a thickness of about 100 m and a length of about 3 km. Five smaller ice islands have thicknesses of more than 5 m and are believed to form where snow accumulation exceeds ablation. (Author).

A large number of boreal lakes are ice-covered in winter. However, research and literature of these lakes concerns by far only the open water season. In particular, no textbook on physics of ice-covered lakes exists, and now it would be a proper time to prepare such. Winter limnology has become an increasing active field of research recently. A series of winter limnology symposia was started in 2008 in Finland with nearly 100 participants. The second symposium was held in Berlin in 2010 and the third one is coming in 2012 in Norway. Winter limnologists need strongly a textbook on lake ice physics since the ice acts as their boundary condition.

A Los Angeles Times Best Book of the Year: “Uniformly excellent” stories about our relationships with each other and with the treacherous natural world (Publishers Weekly). In the title story, a man and woman travel across an eerily frozen lake—under the ice. “The Distance” casts a skeptical eye on Thomas Jefferson through the lens of a Montana man’s visit to Monticello. “Eating” begins with an owl being sucked into a canoe and ends with a man eating a town out of house and home, and “The Cave” is a stunning story of a man and woman lost in an abandoned mine. Other stories include “The Fireman,” “Swans,” “The Prisoners,” “Presidents’ Day,” “Real Town,” and “Two Deer.” Each is remarkable in its own way, sure to please both new readers and avid fans of Rick Bass’s passionate, unmistakable voice. “Bass focuses a naturalist’s eye not only on the frozen lakes and interplay of predator and prey often found in his work but also on the ebb and flow of human emotions and relationships . . . Thought-provoking and entertaining, these stories move along quickly but continue to resonate long after the reader is done; several have been anthologized in award collections.” —Library Journal “Beautiful in their magical imagery, dramatic in their situations, and exquisitely poignant in their insights, these stories of awe and loss are quite astonishing in their mythic use of place and the elements of earth, air, fire, and water.” —Booklist “Bass puts his talent as a nature writer to terrific use.” —The New York Times Book Review “Bass’s language glistens with the beauty of the landscapes he evokes.” —San Francisco Chronicle Book Review
