Lastly, the use of the labels anglo-saxon and Latin, for purposes of easy antithesis, must be defended and apologised for. One hears a good deal in these days about "What America can teach France;" though it is worthnoting that the phrase recurs less often now than it did a year ago.In any case, it would seem more useful to leave the French to discover (as they are doing every day, with the frankest appreciation) what they can learn from us, while we Americans apply ourselves tofinding out what they have to teach us. It is obvious that any two intelligent races are bound to havea lot to learn from each other; and there could hardly be a better opportunity for such an exchangeof experience than now that a great cause has drawn the hearts of our countries together while aterrible emergency has broken down most of the surface barriers between us.No doubt many American soldiers now in France felt this before they left home. When a man wholeaves his job and his family at the first call to fight for an unknown people, because that people isdefending the principle of liberty in which all the great democratic nations believe, he likes to thinkthat the country he is fighting for comes up in every respect to the ideal he has formed of it. Andperhaps some of our men were a little disappointed, and even discouraged, when they first came incontact with the people whose sublime spirit they had been admiring from a distance for three years. Some of them may even, in their first moment of reaction, have said to themselves: "Well, after all, the Germans we knew at home were easier people to get on with

Excerpt from A New Method of Learning the French Language In Parts Second and Fourth, the practical predominates; in Parts Third and Fifth, the theoretical. They are so far independent of each other, that the several parts need not be studied in the order in which they stand. The arrangement, however, was suggested by a long course of experience, and adopted after mature delibera tion. The practical develops principles, elements, and facts, in natural succession, but without regard to scientific method; the theoretical embraces, in a connected view, and in systematic order, the cognate parts that have been studied separately. By this plan, the treatment of the verbs is presented to the mind, unembarrassed with other dimculties; the student, once familiar with their forms, may enter upon a course of reading-lessons, which adds variety to the exercises, and increases his interest in the study of the language. Excerpt from Culturgeschichtliche Novellen It is as in some sort an introduction to such a study of German as I have endeavoured to indicate, so far as this is possible under the limitations of a commentary on a given text, that the present volume has been prepared. The notes are numerous and copious, but I trust they will commend themselves as not of the kind that paralyse the student's own mental activity by superseding the necessity for it; but rather as stimulating it by presenting suitable material in a workable form, and furnishing guidance in such a way as to lead to future independence. The material has of course been supplied in the first place by the text itself. This has been to a small extent supplemented, but chiefly elucidated and illustrated, by matter drawn from sources many of them inaccessible to the English reader. A not inconsiderable element may lay some claim to origi nality, and perhaps this will be the most valuable part of the book to the real student, because treating from the objective standpoint of the foreigner, specially of the Englishman, matters of idiomatic difficulty upon which only scattered hints are to be found in sources English or German. I may refer particularly to the notes on the particles, on the exact force, as felt in the original, of words like erst, z'ibrzlgms, vol lends, &c., and of certain familiar but peculiar modes of con ception and expression which are too completely ingrained in the consciousness of a native for him easily to make them the objects of analysis or of explanation to others. Excerpt from A First French Book This First French Book is not intended to fill the place of a reference grammar of the French language. The aim in its preparation has been to offer a work so thorough, however, as to lay an adequate foundation for further study. The chief idea of the author has been to lead the learner to conscious knowledge, to develop his faculty of deriving principles for himself. The habit of seeking out and ex plaining differences, and noting resemblances, between the foreign and the native idiom is of the utmost value, not only in training the judgment, but also in practically ao quiring the language. Throughout this book these differ ences, in particular, are constantly dwelt upon, and va rions devices are employed to call attention to them in a striking manner. For this reason examples precede in every case the formulation of a rule. The learner, moreover, is constantly put on his guard against the stereotyped errors to which speakers of English are prone when attempting to express themselves in French. This comparative method is applied in all parts of'the book, as well in the treatment of pronunciation as in inflection and syntax. The French exercises consist usually of groups of sen'= tenoes offering connected sense. The pupil is encouraged from the outset to learn to infer the meanings of words from the context, and to look them up rather as a confirmation or correction of, than as a substitution for, his own ingenu ity. Hence the special vocabularies follow the exercises, as do also the notes that explain minor points. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from A Textbook on French There are many ways in which man may make his thoughts known to others; as, for example, by grimace, gesture, the signs Of the deaf and dumb, symbols, pictorial writing, and pictures. But better than any or all Of these, are oral speech and written language. It is chiefly by this faculty Of speech that man is distinguished from the lower animals, and this faculty is so far above the power of expression possessed by brutes that many people believe human language to have been a gift of divine origin. Excerpt from French by Reading: A Progressive French Method Tim one point to be kept ever in view, in teaching French by this method, is to make the study easy. The pupil's mind should never be needlessly diverted from the main purpose, that of thinking in French, by any avoidable perplexity, either as to the meaning of a phrase or as to the grammatical principles which govern it. The vocabulary which is to give form to the thought is always the first consideration, and it is to be attained by the easiest and most rapid means possible. The grammatical rules are in every case to explain the form, never to precede it. In the case of very young pupils, therefore, it is desirable that even the notes explanatory of the lesson should be given by the teacher orally, rather than read by the pupil. In no case are they intended to be learned. The grammatical rules, on the contrary, are to be learned, and learned perfectly; but not until the reading lesson has been gone over at least once, - in the case of young children, twice. The method of study should, therefore, be as follows. First, the reading of the text of the lesson, with the interlinear translation, as far as it exists; after that, the text is to be read in class, without prep aration, the teacher supplying the English meaning of all new words. The second lesson should consist of the same text, prepared before hand by the aid of the Vocabulary at the end of the book (which contains only those translations of the word required by the book), and of the grammatical references, if needed. The third lesson should consist of the large type of the grammar lesson, thoroughly committed to memory, and a third reading of the text, at sight. In a class of older children, after the first nine lessons, two repetitions of the text should be sufficient, the grammar study accompanying the second repetition. Excerpt from The Direct Method of Teaching French As I was writing the Preface of my French text, La Classe en Frangais, I thought I heard the teachers not yet initiated in direct teaching ask, at almost every line, for some additional explanations. They will find them in the present little volume. It contains, together with the method of using La Classe en F fungais and the justification of its program, a complete technique concerning the direct explanation of words, and a detailed description of the exercises by which they may be fixed in the memory. This, and more particularly, perhaps, such of the examples given as go to make up the language used in conducting-the class, will smooth my young colleagues' way. And I hope that, confident in their method and sure of sucéess, they will see their pupils come joyfully to receive their.
