Excerpt from Four Years at Yale The erroneous and absurd ideas which very many intelligent people, who have not chanced to experience it, entertain upon the subject of college life, have led me to believe that a minute account of affairs as they exist today at one of the chief American colleges would not be without value to the general public, nor without interest to the alumni and undergraduates of other colleges as well as of the one described. Hence, though not without some little diffidence, I venture to offer this compilation of facts, which no one has ever yet taken the trouble to group together, with the hope that it may be of service as a corrector of Opinion and of interest as an aid to the memory. Looking at things from the undergraduate in distinction from the official stand-point, Ihave given as little attention as possible to those matters which a formal historian would render prominent, and have gone into the smallest details in cases which he would take no notice of. I have accounted no fact too trivial or insignifi cant to be unworthy of record. I have attached no moral to the most important one. I have simply endeavored to place every scrap of evidence fairly before the reader, leaving him to decide for himself how much of it to use in making up his judgment. I have studiously refrained from urging any idea or theory of my own, and have endeavored, in cases where some expression bf Opinion seemed necessary, to offer simply the prevailing sentiment of college. Yet, that my position may not be misunderstood, I have added a Concluding Chapter, for the expression of my personal beliefs, and I respectfully ask that no one represent anything in the book as an opinion of mine until he has read that chapter. Facts are facts, and because I see fit to describe them in cold blood, with out comment of any sort, I do not wish to be quoted either as approving of or as condemning them. Excerpt from Class of Fifty-Four: Yale University, 1854-1896 Should any enquire, wherefore this long de lay? My reply is, the reasons are good and sufh cient. Yet remembering that although speech may be silver, silence is golden, and being myself a be liever in the gold basis, probably it is wiser that they should not be given, but that I should merely com mend to you the old woman's blessing: Lord, for what we are about to receive, make us duly thankful. Excerpt from The Four Men: Delivered to the Students of Yale University There is one phrase in it especially which requires explanation, because it is old English and has not at all the meaning which the sound conveys to our ears. This is the phrase, I know nothing by myself. These words suggest to us the idea, I know noth ing by my own natural faculties without divine illumination, or some such meaning. But they do not mean anything like this. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Stover at Yale Dink Stover, freshman, chose his seat in the afternoon express that would soon be rushing him to New Haven and his first glimpse of Yale University. He leisurely divested himself of his trim overcoat, folding it in exact creases and laying it gingerly across the back of his seat; stowed his traveling-bag; smoothed his hair with a masked movement of his gloved hand; pulled down a buckskin vest, opening the lower button; removed his gloves and folded them in his breast pocket, while with the same gesture a careful forefinger, unperceived, assured itself that his lilac silk necktie was in snug contact with the high collar whose points, painfully but in perfect style, attacked his chin. Then, settling, not flopping, down, he completed his preparations for the journey by raising the sharp crease of the trousers one inch over each knee - a legendary precaution which in youth is believed to prevent vulgar bagging. Each movement was executed without haste or embarrassment, but leisurely, with the deliberate savoir-faire of the complete man of the world he had become at the terrific age of eighteen. In front of him spasmodic freshmen arrived, struggling from their overcoats in embarrassed plunges that threatened to leave them publicly in their shirt sleeves. Excerpt from Fifteen Years in the Chapel of Yale College The discourses in this volume were prepared for definite academic uses, and written in a distinctively academic spirit. Fifteen Of them were delivered as Baccalaureate sermons before the classes which were graduated during the presi deney of the writer. The remaining three have some his toric interest. While their themes are practical, the treat ment of them is more or less philosophical. If some of them may seem to be positive and polemical in their tone, it will be remembered that the occasions for writing them were held by the writer to be real and serious, and the truths which they set forth were believed to be timely and important. Should any one of his old pupils chance to open this volume, he may recognize the expression of thoughts which he heard many years ago, -perhaps with little heed, - bu't to which the experiences of his subse quent life have given their serious attestation. Whether this shall be, or not, he cannot be mistaken, if, in these utterances of positive conviction, he shall think he still hears the expression of affectionate regard from his old.
