Excerpt from Plain Sermons, Vol. 2 of 2 "While we look not at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen: for the things which are seen are temporal, but the things which are not seen are eternal." There is a truth which we all know equally well, - whether we are learned or ignorant, old or young; we are all equally well assured of the truth, - that the things which we see are temporal, - only for a time, and fast passing away. And yet, though we know it so well, our heavenly Father seems, if I may so speak, to take great pains to remind us of it constantly; as if it were of very great consequence that we should be continually thinking of it, and as if we were very likely, practically, to forget it. For in every thing about us, and in ourselves, and in Scripture, the Almighty seems to be continually forcing this truth upon our minds. In every thing about us, - for what are day and night so quickly following each other, but little images of life and of death, and of resurrection after death? "There is neither speech nor language, but their voices are heard among them; one day telleth another, and one night certifieth another." And what are Spring and Autumn, Summer and Winter so quietly indeed and steadily, but so rapidly, succeeding each other? Let the employments which belong to that sphere be so arranged, that each may keep its place without justling another; and that which regards the world, may not inter ifere with what is due to God. In propor tion to the multiplicity of affairs, the oh servance of order becomes more indis pensable. But scarcely is there any train of life so Slmple and uniform, but what 'will suffer through the neglect of it. I speak not now of suffering in point Of worldly interest. Excerpt from Two Sermons Rest is a blessing which properly belongs to the child of God it is his spiritual birthright. The idea glimmers, like some distant nebula, through every page of the Holy Scriptures. You see it in the ordinance of the Sabbath in the law relating to the tilling of the soil, which provided that the land was to lie fallow, to rest, every seventh year the year of Jubilee too was a time of peculiar and emphatic rest; the idea was symbolised in the Conquest of Canaan. Then as if to show us evenstill more clearly how this idea of rest enters into the Divine plan of human life, God is Spoken of as resting it is of course inconceivable that He should actually be fatigued, it were profanity to suppose that He who fainteth not, neither is weary, of whose understanding there is no searching, can ever be in a condition to render rest needful, and yet when He had finished all the work from His hands in the six days' creation we are told He rested on the seventh day and sanctified it. There is then a rest of God, and there remaineth therefore a rest to the people of God it is of this rest, not in its highest development in heaven but in its present enjoyment, that we are about to speak' this morning, - this rest in the Lord. Excerpt from Forty Family Sermons These considerations will perhaps lead the reader to account for, if not to justify, the usual plan of the following discourses. That they are brief, and are attempted to be simple, and easily intelligible, and seldom or never controversial, needs no apology. That they should be chiefly elementary, embracing the lead ing points of Christian doctrine and practice, is what the writer wished, at least, to attain. That they are too calm, too little conversant with the striking illustrations and never-forgotten words which are sometimes heard in the pulpit, is partly the writer's defect, but it is also partly incidental; for a sermon written errpressly to be read in families - perhaps often by a son or daughter, the whole audience being only the parents, children, and servants - would be wholly unsuitable if composed in a style very proper for the pulpit. Denunciations must often becorns persuasions; fervent appeals to various classes of character must often become rather Scriptural statements respecting such classes of character, since either the originals may not be present, or, if present, the application might be improperly personal; the pas toral authoritative you, must sink into the modest we; and the whole assume the air of simple discussion, afl'ectionate advice, gentle persuasion, and plain Scrip tural instruction, rather than those elevated features which the family reader could not with propriety adopt, so as to make the sermon his own. This would be no excuse for want of faithfulness or earnestness, but it greatly modifies the style of conveying Scriptural truth. Excerpt from Plain Sermons, Vol. 4 Every person who has read his prayer-book with any degree of attention, knows that this season of Lent is appointed by the Church for the especial exercise of repentance; that she intends us to refrain for a while even from the innocent pleasures of the world, that our time and thoughts may be the freer to consider our past lives, to bewail and confess our sins, and so prepare our selves, with thankful hearts, to acknowledge the infinite mercies of god in christ jesus on the great days of His death and resurrection. Excerpt from Fresh Views of Old Truths: Church Sermons T is undeniable that there is often a wearisome sameness about Sermons which has afforded sad occasion for the contempt only too readily expressed for them by an irreligious world. The Author hopes and believes that he has at the least avoided this fault. The repelling element of constantly recurring religious common-places, and the stock phrases which are meant to cover, but never really conceal from the intelligent, poverty or confusion of thought, will not be found in these Sermons. Very early in the days of the world they became a just cause of complaint. Even by the godly Job they were found intolerable: and he signified his impatience of them in the plainest language. How forcible (says be) are right words. But what doth your arguing reprove I have heard many such things: miserable comforters are ye all! Shall vain words have an end? I also could speak as ye do: if your soul were in my soul's stead, I could heap up words against you, and shake mine head at you. But I would strengthen you with my mouth. The conventional terms too, so appropriate to systematic theology, are but very sparingly introduced; the Author considering them out of place in Parochial Sermons, as inconsistent with the simplicity of the Gospel, and irrelevant to the plain teachings that the Preacher should be setting himself to gather in a practical form from the passage before him. Excerpt from Sermons on Important Subjects The command here addressed to the Israelites, is binding upon every impenitent sinner, to whom the Gospel shall be addressed. He is required to perform the same duty, upon the same penalty. It becomes, therefore, a matter of infinite importance that we should well understand, and fully and immediately 'obey, the requirement. The questions that would naturally arise to a reflecting mind on reading this text, are the following. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
