DOWNLOAD EBOOKExcerpt from The Flower Garden, 1859: Or Breck's Book of Flowers; In Which Are Described All the Various Hardy Herbaceous Perennials, Annuals, Shrubby Plants, and Evergreen Trees, Desirable for Ornamental Purposes, With Directions for Their Cultivation The object of this volume is the diffusion of general knowledge and practical information in relation to the floral kingdom, particularly for hardy trees, shrubs and plants, desirable for the embellishment of the flower-garden and pleasure-ground. It is not designed as a scientific treatise for those far advanced in the knowledge of plants, but for new beginners, who are just entering the temple of Flora; or, as a book of reference to those who have but little time for research, and who desire some simple instructions as to the mode of culture, or description of the habits, of plants or seeds which they may wish to grow. That it may be more acceptable to the great majority, technical descriptions have been avoided as much as possible. I consider it important that plants should be generally known by their scientific name, as this is universal, while the common name is only local; and have, therefore, given precedence to the botanical name, and followed with the common name, where any has been known. Some work of this kind, it has often appeared to me, was much needed. It has often been called for, in my business as seedsman. Customers will purchase a quantity of seeds, not knowing, perhaps, anything about their habits, cultivation, or treatment, or that there should be any difference in their management. DOWNLOAD EBOOKExcerpt from The Florist, Fruitist, and Garden Miscellany, 1859 WE offer with the new year our usual summary of the novelties of the past season. In doing this we wish it to be understood that it is the most prominent of those which have appeared in public, or have been figured or noticed in the various botanical and horticultural publications, that we here bring together for ready reference. There are, no doubt, others, which have found their way into gardens, which have not taken so prominent a position, or which we shall hear of hereafter. Our notes are necessarily brief, on account of the space they would otherwise have occupied, but we trust sufficient to give some general idea Of the several plants. We have thought it useful, moreover, to record the accessible figures of the plants which have been issued. Florists' flowers are excluded from our plan, and we have arranged our notes under the heads of orchids, stove plants, and greenhouse and hardy plants, for the purpose of greater distinctness. DOWNLOAD EBOOKExcerpt from The Floral World and Garden Guide, Vol. 2: January, 1859 The botany of this subject is well worth the study of those who take an interest in the growth and forms of cryptogamic vegetation; and recent inquiries and experiments by scientific men, have resulted in pretty clearly unfolding the physiological principles on which this undergrowth of mycelium proceeds. Whether the gardener may or may not choose to explore this department of natural history into its most delicate and beautiful of microscopic details, he cannot ignore the fact that dead wood is often the originator of a plague which will surely destroy the best of his trees and shrubs, and so poison the soil that nothing will thrive in it. DOWNLOAD EBOOKThe restoration of the flower gardens at Monticello in 1941, sponsored by the Garden Club of Virginia, was the result of Edwin Betts's scholarly research and Hazlehurst Perkins's practical gardening skills. Thomas Jefferson's Flower Garden at Monticello presents the evolution of Jefferson's ornamental gardening efforts with an analysis of the flower gardens as they were planned, planted, and ultimately restored. No early American gardens were as well-documented as those at Monticello, which became an experimental station, a botanic garden of new and unusual plants from around the world. Betts and Perkins communicate here the nature and sources of Jefferson's intelligent venture into ornamental gardening. The third edition includes a revised plant list, annotation of the more than 100 species cultivated in the flower garden, and new illustrations.
