Excerpt from Flora of the Southern United States: Containing an Abridged Description of the Flowering Plants and Ferns of Tennessee, North and South Carolina, Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi, and Florida; Arranged According to the Natural System When the first edition of this work was issued, some portions of the country embraced within the limits assigned to it were imperfectly investigated or wholly unexplored. But the discoveries in Southern botany made during the last few years by Feay, Garber, Curtiss, and others, of tropical forms on the peninsula and keys of Florida, by Dr. Gattinger of Northern forms which extend into Tennessee and the mountains of North Carolina, and by correspondents from other States, have become so numerous that a new edition of the Southern Flora is required to embrace them. In this edition I have concluded to incorporate these additions in the form of a Supplement to the first edition, avoiding any material alterations in it. And now, since the different sections of all the States which are included in the limits embraced by this work have been pretty thoroughly explored, and future acquisitions will, probably, be comparatively few in number, the time seems to have arrived when the promise provisionally made in the Preface to the first edition may be at least partially fulfilled.
