Deep in the Finger Lakes Region of New York. Lives a boy who shares the love of fishing with his grandfather. Who receives a gift of a fishing lure for his birthday. His enjoyment of his new gift is cut short. With a twist of faith, his grandfather's love for fishing is renewed in one single moment that changes everything. Reminding us all of the American dream through a relationship with a boy and his grandfather."Official OnlineBookClub.org: Review of "The Fishing Lure" by Greer Alexis Bacon. 4 out of 4 stars" Family is one of the most important things in life, particularly the child-parent and child-grandparent relationship, and it feels like one being lost over time. When I was a child, we watched things like Full House where no one was perfect, but family stuck together and things always worked out. These days, however, it feels like kids shows represent parents as just silly or unknowledgeable and celebrate the child that mocks them or flat-out disobeys them. Particularly when a child is at the age to be read to, the importance of family should be a key point, and Greer Alexis Bacon's The Fishing Lure does just that across four generations, celebrating what's great about family, spending time together and passing along traditions. The Fishing Lure begins with a boy known only as "Stars and Stripes" for being born on Independence Day, sharing his love of fishing with his grandfather, a WWII vet. Gramps, you see, always loved fishing and took his son when he raised him, and has continued the tradition with his grandson. On Stars and Stripes's 7th birthday his parents get him a new fishing pole and his Gramps gives him a hand painted fishing lure, with the thirteen stripes and 50 stars of the flag upon it, along with the year 1776. The next morning, Stars and Stripes takes his stars and stripes fishing lure and new pole out for a spin. Unfortunately, a snapping turtle gets a hold of the line and the lure is seemingly lost forever. Time goes on, Stars and Stripes opens a fishing shop right there on the Finger Lakes where he always fished and he even has a son. When his Gramps passes, he follows his request to scatter the ashes over the pond the two of them visited, and in doing so his son finds the special fishing lure he lost 22 years ago.The best comparison I can find for The Fishing Lure is one of those Pixar shorts. The book is short, portrays its points expertly, it's touching and sad, even for an adult, and ends on one of those "fighting back a tear while I smile" moments that every single one of them seems to give me. The illustrations in the book are wonderful as well - they colors pop and even sparkle in places, all done with water color paint, and feel like a cross between anime and traditional cartoons. There are a total of 11 in the book's 20ish pages, not including 3 more in a tiny section in the back where the illustrator, T.D Smartgroupvn, briefly explains how the illustrations are done. Official Book review: onlinebookclub.comThe Fishing Lure is a wonderful, short children's book that really captures the love of family without having to even say it's there, and it's a must have for parents to share with their kids, therefore earning itself 4 out of 4 stars. The version I reviewed from Amazon on my Kindle app allowed me to double-click each illustration, making it easy to show to kids as you read it to them (or as they read it themselves even!). The fact that the book is dedicated to the author's own grandfather, also a WWII vet who shared his love of fishing with his grandchildren makes it even more lovable. I found no grammatical errors or oddities, and honestly even reading through a second time with a fine-tooth comb I can't think of anything to make it better!******

A book “that has very little to do with trout fishing and a lot to do with the lamenting of a passing pastoral America . . . an instant cult classic” (Financial Times). Richard Brautigan was a literary idol of the 1960s and ’70s who came of age during the heyday of Haight-Ashbury and whose comic genius and iconoclastic vision of American life caught the imaginations of young people everywhere. Called “the last of the Beats,” his early books became required reading for the hip generation, and on its publication Trout Fishing in America became an international bestseller. An indescribable romp, the novel is best summed up in one word: mayonnaise. This new edition features an introduction by poet Billy Collins, who first encountered Brautigan’s work as a student in California. From the introduction: “‘Trout Fishing in America’ is a catchphrase that morphs throughout the book into a variety of conceptual and dramatic shapes. At one point it has a physical body that bears such a resemblance to that of Lord Byron that it is brought by ship from Missolonghi to England, in 1824, where it is autopsied. ‘Trout Fishing in America’ is also a slogan that sixth-graders enjoy writing on the backs of first-graders. . . . In one notable exhibition of the title’s variability, ‘Trout Fishing in America’ turns into a gourmet with a taste for walnut catsup and has Maria Callas for a girlfriend. Through such ironic play, Brautigan destabilizes any conventional idea of a book as he begins to create a world where things seem unwilling to stay in their customary places.”

Can each of us achieve our own American dream while recognizing needs of other individuals, society, and future generations? Not if our present national policies continue, warns long term planning expert Joseph L. Daleiden. He persuasively argues that if present socioeconomic trends remain, our nation faces social disaster before the middle of the 21st century. These trends can be reversed, he insists, but only if we are willing to (1) reject failed policies both liberal and conservative directed at population growth, the environment, the national debt, trade, poverty, crime, race relations, education, healthcare, social security, and tax reform; (2) accept that all of these areas of concern are intertwined; and (3) take responsibility for our decisions.Avoiding ideology and platitudes, Daleiden's pragmatic approach relies on actual evidence of how prospective policies will influence human behavior and whether their outcomes will increase or decrease human happiness in the long run.Joseph L. Daleiden (Evanston, IL) is also the author of The Final Superstition: A Critical Evaluation of the Judeo-Christian Legacy, and The Science of Morality: The Individual, Community, and Future Generations.

From life in the streets and love in the alleys to fame in the spotlight and an untimely death—raw, biting, and brilliant selections from the personal journals of one of the most uniquely creative artists of the late twentieth century When his life ended at age thirty-seven—a casualty of the AIDS epidemic that took so many before their time—David Wojnarowicz had long since established himself as one of America’s most vital artists and activists. In the Shadow of the American Dream is a stunning collection of riveting and revealing chapters from Wojnarowicz’s extensive personal diaries—thirty volumes’ worth of memories and lucid observations, some bitter, some sweet—that the author began writing when he was seventeen and continued until his death two decades later. Here is a brilliant chronicle of an artist’s emergence—a young man’s still achingly fresh memories of his unhappy adolescence and his glorious discovery of self. Wojnarowicz recalls his life on Manhattan’s Lower East Side with no shame or regret, and shares his hitchhiking journeys across the country. He talks of art and love and sex—embracing who he is fully and accepting his heartbreaking fate without pathos—while providing fascinating glimpses into the vibrant and colorful New York art scene and poignant views of life and death among the AIDS community. At once frightening and courageous, joyous and disturbing, enlightening and honest, In the Shadow of the American Dream is a treasured addition to the enduring literary legacy of David Wojnarowicz and a true testament to his unique brilliance.

This book divulges personal stories and perspectives that I believe will enlighten people about me, why I came to America, and what I consider to be the best way for new American citizens to recognize their New American Dreams. In several conversations with friends and colleagues, they thought it would be good for me to write a book to tell the world about my life. They include: Angela Harris of the Tennessee Foreign Language Institute, Donna Kumar of InfoWorks, Kathy Edson of Vanderbilt Institute for Clinical and Translational Research and NICEs board chair, Anam Gnaho and Tseday Girma of Ethiopia Community Development Council, Inc., Sarah Russ of Nashville International Center for Empowerment, Cayce Pack of United Children Funds, my family and many others. Their encouragement made it possible for me to share my story and personal views of the world. Thank you all for your encouragement and support of this project. Also, I dont want this book to be limited to academia, and thats why I name the authors of the works I've quoted and used for research but do not include publication dates for those works in the text. My research included reviews of literature in several disciplines, especially leadership, management, and psychology, as I thought these would support the books educational purposes. The first part of this book tells the history of my journey in life. The second part contains essays about a new mission for those coming to America and how to carry out this new mission. The final part offers my recommendations for realizing the New American Dream for all people, whether they live in America or not.

For three years, journalist Richard Louv listened to America by going fishing with Americans. Doing what many of us dream of, he traveled from the Atlantic to the Pacific, from trout waters east and west to bass waters north and south. Fly-Fishing for Sharks is the result of his journey, a portrait of America on the water, fishing rod in hand. To explore the cultures of fishing, Louv joined a bass tournament on Lake Erie and got a casting lesson from fly-fishing legend Joan Wulff He angled with corporate executives in Montana and fly-fished for sharks in California. He spent time with fishing-boat captains in Florida, the regulars who fish New York City's Hudson River, and a river witch in Colorado. He teamed secrets of fishing and living from steelheaders in the Northwest, Bass'n Gals in Texas, and an ice-fisher in the North Woods. Along the way, he heard from one of Hemingway's sons what it was like to fish with Papa and from Robert Kennedy, Jr., how fishing changed his fife. As he describes the eccentricities, obsessions, and tribulations of dedicated anglers, he also uncovers the values that unite them. He reveals the healing qualities of fishing, how it binds the generations, how the angling business has grown, and how the future of fishing is threatened. But most of all, Fly-Fishing for Sharks is about the unforgettable characters Louv meets on the water and the stories they tell. From them, Louv learns about our changing relationship with nature, about a hidden America -- and about himself.

JAMES BEARD AWARD WINNER IACP Cookbook Award finalist In the face of apocalyptic climate change, a former fisherman shares a bold and hopeful new vision for saving the planet: farming the ocean. Here Bren Smith—pioneer of regenerative ocean agriculture—introduces the world to a groundbreaking solution to the global climate crisis. A genre-defining “climate memoir,” Eat Like a Fish interweaves Smith’s own life—from sailing the high seas aboard commercial fishing trawlers to developing new forms of ocean farming to surfing the frontiers of the food movement—with actionable food policy and practical advice on ocean farming. Written with the humor and swagger of a fisherman telling a late-night tale, it is a powerful story of environmental renewal, and a must-read guide to saving our oceans, feeding the world, and—by creating new jobs up and down the coasts—putting working class Americans back to work.
