I became aware of the Dropped D tuning in 1960. It literally exploded my playing. Just by lowering the sixth string down a tone - from E to D, my guitar sounded so much fuller. The tuning seemed to open up the fingerboard whether playing in the Keys of D, G or A. An alternating bass sounded huge and dynamic. Over the last 60 years I, as well as guitar playing friends, have explored playing in Dropped D. From folk and gospel to blues and early jazz to Celtic melodies and O'Carolan compositions to original instrumental compositions. This collection covers a lot of musical terrain. There's plenty of musical notes, styles, techniques in these pages. Travel slowly and try to absorb the arrangements one by one. The constant throughout is the Dropped D tuning. Instead of approaching Dropped D tuning via the route of "Standard" tuning, El went directly from CGDGAD tuning, and has succeeded in finding in Dropped D tuning musical qualities that are very unusual and compelling. The tunes range from Celtic, to spiritual, to Americana, to pop music, with a classical piece also included. The accompanying CD contains performances of certain tunes by Warren S. Haskell, an acclaimed player, teacher and recording artist based in Northern California. Warren's precise playing makes it easy for the student to hear and understand the music.
This book features 22 gems of gospel and hymn music, arranged in various keys in dropped D tuning (DADGBE - 6th to 1st string) for the intermediate and advanced guitarist. The arrangements provide compelling evidence that dropped D tuning has been liberated from its usual position as simply a variant of standard tuning. In this book, it takes on an exciting open-tuning character. Innovative string choices and guitar voicings are employed to evoke different textures for the various melodies. The music ranges from the single-note treatment reminiscent ofthe solo singer, to the flowing, arpeggiated approach of the harper, to the chordal power of the organist. The pace can be slow and meditative, or up-tempo andcelebratory. The presentation is in tablature and standard notation
