Excerpt from Happy Days in Southern California No, it was not a common abode Of a man of the traveled class, without individuality, but a room in which one felt at ease, assured that its owner was well brought up, a man whose body, soul, and mind had each grown without invading the territory of the others, and there fore not at their expense. The room did not say, See what my master can afford; see what a surfeit Of wealth I hold. Nay, it said, My master is reflected in me; here is seren ity and refinement, not an embarrassment of riches. The room was not like some banker's good wife who is lost behind the glamour of her jewels, but was like that good-wife who herself adorns her apparel, whose adornment is for gotten in herself. Excerpt from Guide to the Value of California Gold The different forms in which California gold has been brought to the Mint, are lumps and grains, bars, coins, and amalgam: of the last three, there have been but few deposits. It has been ascertained by the Assayers of the Mint that, as a general rule, the flat spangles of the rivers, are better than the average of other grains, perhaps as much as one per cent., while the large lumps appear to be higher, generally, than either, not invariably so. By reference to Table A, it appears that seven-eighth of all the deposits made in the Mint, from the commencement of the California business to the present period, show a variation in quality of only 50 cents per ounce troy, the fineness ranging between 878% thousandths and 898% thousandths. Excerpt from Two Years in California The permanency of first impressions is strikingly shown by the very common impression in regard to California. It was first known to the world as a gold producing country, and men are slow to learn that While gold continues to be a very considerable product it is far exceeded in value and extent by other indus tries. The gold product is now principally obtained by quartz-mining, which requires large capital to con duct it. There is no longer any furor connected with the business, nor are fortunes now made in a day. Mining is conducted as a legitimate business, of which the average yield has been, for the last few years, about twenty millions of dollars per annum. As a bullion producing State, including gold and silver, California has fallen into the second place - it is outranked by Nevada, which, in 1875, produced more than twice as much as the Golden State. But the increase in agri cultural products is more than an offset for the falling off in this direction. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from California 46 to 88 It is usual for a bookmaker to present himself to his readers by something in way of preface. This might not be needed in the present case were it not that this writer deems it well to apologize for his boldness as an unlettered man, in trying to write a book at all, and also to crave that his frequent use of the first personal pronoun singular may not be set down to vanity, but rather to the fact of its being convenient for stating, briefly, matters personal to himself, and of his own memory and experience. To old Pioneers in the American settlement of California some parts of the following record may appear incorrect, and some may be too familiar or unimportant to be interesting; but let each fact be taken as a link in a chain of a California life, and its value, though small, may be acknowledged. It has appeared to this writer that every fact relating to the early settlement of California should be recorded and treasured up; in fact, that it is the duty of every Pioneer to put in writing his early California experience. Excerpt from Sixty Years of California Song This book has been written for friends and musical associates of more than half a century. The author's life has been a busy one, often with events of public import, and so it may be that this volume has value as history. Those who should know have so affirmed. It is hoped that old-time Californians will find the book good reading. The later generations of students and musicians will be interested in the story of one who helped to prepare the way for them. The narrative tells somewhat of the Christian ministry of a noble father, of the writer's career as a public singer and of reminiscences Of many associated musicians, efficient factors in the development of music in California to the high place it holds today. Some mention is made of distinguished divines and men of note in the professions and in business. The part taken by the author in political campaigns and in the activities of the Grand Army of the Republic will appeal to patriots. Some chapters on the Singing voice and its cultivation are the fruitage of a wide experience of many years. A list of pupils for three decades is added. The illustrations have been at once a labor of love and an extravagance of money cost, but it is believed that the reader will find in that feature alone justification for the publication. Excerpt from Tales of Old California I had just come out of the Mission Garden, that quaint old spot laid out so many years ago n the early Fathers to be their last resting-place. Adre Ximeno was a dear friend of mine and I never lost an opportunity for an hour's gossip whenever I found myself in the little pueblo of Dos Cuervos. I was still lingering for a few last words with the good Old man, though the bells for vespers were ringing loudly, and I knew I should be keeping him from his duty, when the figure of a woman came toiling up the steep path to the foothills. Shrivelled and dark, old and frail, she seemed scarcely able to pull one foot after the other; nevertheless she was carrying a half-grown dog in one arm, while with the other hand she partly led, partly dragged two miserable mongrels tied to gether by pieces of old gunny-sack.
