It will be seen therefrom that the pros perity of the Library of Chicago has been commensurate with the general growth of the city. For the first time Since its existence have the volumes on its shelves reached the number of one hundred thousand and upwards, and the institution is rapidly approaching that magnitude and importance which will entitle it to rank as one among the great book collections of the world. On the first day of June, 1884, it contained books, or more than on the same day'of the preceding year. This increase of volumes is by far larger than during any former 'year, excepting only\the year of its foundation.
