Excerpt from Blue-Stocking Hall, Vol. 3 of 3 This, my dearest Emily, is the last letter which you will receive from Frederick in Lon don; and though time speeds on rapid Wing in this focus of attraction, I reckon the days with impatience till the heath-clad tops of our dear mountains break upon my View. To travel, and see new men and manners, would be too delightful, if mother and sisters were with me, but, unfashionable as the confession may be, I own to the weakness of loving mine enough to. Excerpt from Mary Russell Mitford: The Tragedy of a Blue Stocking Miss Mitford's name is not a familiar one to this generation and it is with the desire to alter this that the following pages have been written. It would be impossible, within the compass of a book of this size, to show forth Miss Mitford's life in its entirety What we have done has been to select from the records of her life and work such incidents and such friendships as seemed to us to portray her most faithfully. Whether we have succeeded must be left to the reader to judge. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Blue-Stocking Hall, Vol. 1 of 2 Pnnnars you and I are at this moment similarly sit'u' ated, and similarly employed. 1 am seated at a window which opens on the sea, waiting for a summons to the steam-packet which is to waft me over to Calais - while you are, probably, expecting that which is to convey you to Ireland. When I reach France I shall certainly send you a bill of health from time to time but as few things are less satisfactory than letters from the road, I shall re serve my share in the performance of our parting cove nant till I am quietly settled at Geneva. Bringing together top specialists in the field, this edited volume challenges the theory that the eighteenth-century British intellectual women known as the Bluestockings were an isolated phenomenon spanning the period from the 1750s through the 1790s. On the contrary, the contributors suggest, the Bluestockings can be conceptualized as belonging to a chain of interconnected networks, taking their origin at a threshold moment in print media and communications development and extending into the present. The collection begins with a definition of the Bluestockings as a social role rather than a fixed group, a movement rather than a static phenomenon, an evolving dynamic reaching into our late-modern era. Essays include a rare transcript of a Bluestocking conversation; new, previously unknown Bluestockings brought to light for the first time; and descriptions of Bluestocking activity in the realms of natural history, arts and crafts, theatre, industry, travel, and international connections. The concluding essay argues that the Blues reimagined and practiced women’s work in ways that adapted to and altered the course of modernity, decisively putting a female imprint on economic, social, and cultural modernization. Demonstrating how the role of the Bluestocking has evolved through different historical configurations yet has structurally remained the same, the collection traces the influence of the Blues on the Romantic Period through the nineteenth century and proposes the reinvention of Bluestocking practice in the present.
