After the polar ice caps melt in the Thaw, the Corporations take control of the flooded zones and create virtual utopias over the great cities of the past that rest below the waves. April Yale is accepted into college, in the stilted mega-city of Greater York, to study programming and robotics for the Frame, the massive worldwide information net which hosts countless Virtual Reality and Augmented Reality locations. On her first day of class, her father vanishes and corporate agents and military come asking questions about him and his location, claiming he has stolen top secret experimental military technology. April's life changes forever as she and her college professor, Doctor Adya Konda, go in search of April's dad, both on the Frame and across the mega-metropolis. Truths are uncovered that may be too much for April to handle.

The train’s ghostly whistle howled in the cool, damp night. After several hours, the nerve-cutting screech of the cattle car’s wheels had left a sharp hum in Jacob’s ears. After more uncountable minutes that became hours, the train finally came to a halt. He could hear the sounds of doors slamming on their railings as they were opened. Many commands were being shouted, and the vicious barking of dogs echoed from outside the car. He could see lights through the slits of the confine. When the door to their car slid open, the same locking slam of it on its railings cut through him. The sounds from the outside became much clearer and coldly more frightening. He clutched his violin tightly and felt the rush of the crisp night air. For a moment, it cleared the stench of the confining car where they’d been locked into and hauled. An old woman asked the most poignant question that stuck out in his mind. “Where are we?” He didn’t know who answered her. “We are at death’s doors,” someone whispered.

This book enables readers to interrogate the technical, rhetorical, theoretical, and socio-ethical challenges and opportunities involved in the development and adoption of augmentation technologies and artificial intelligence. The core of our human experience and identity is forever affected by the rise of augmentation technologies that enhance human capability or productivity. These technologies can add cognitive, physical, sensory, and emotional enhancements to the body or environment. This book demonstrates the benefits, risks, and relevance of emerging augmentation technologies such as brain–computer interaction devices for cognitive enhancement; robots marketed to improve human social interaction; wearables that extend human senses, augment creative abilities, or overcome physical limitations; implantables that amplify intelligence or memory; and devices, AI generators, or algorithms for emotional augmentation. It allows scholars and professionals to understand the impact of these technologies, improve digital and AI literacy, and practice new methods for their design and adoption. This book will be vital reading for students, scholars, and professionals in fields including technical communication, UX design, computer science, human factors, information technology, sociology of technology, and ethics. Welcome to the proceedings of the 5th International Conference on Scale-Space and PDE Methods in Computer Vision. The scale-space concept was introduced by Iijima more than 40 years ago and became popular later on through the works of Witkin and Koenderink. It is at the junction of three major schools of thought in image processing and computer vision: the design of ?lters, axiomatic approaches based on partial di?erential equations (PDEs), and variational methods for image regularization. Scale-space ideas belong to the mathematically best-understood approaches in image analysis. They have entered numerous successful applications in medical imaging and a number of other ?elds where they often give results of very high quality. This conference followed biennial meetings held in Utrecht, Corfu, Vancouver and Skye. It took place in a little castle (Schl ̈ osschen Sch ̈ onburg) near the small town of Hofgeismar, Germany. Inspired by the very successful previous meeting at Skye, we kept the style of gathering people in a slightly remote and scenic place in order to encourage many fruitful discussions during the day and in the evening.
