Metal nanoparticles (MNP) are widely researched for the fabrication of novel low cost and more energy efficient optoelectronic devices. MNPs, which exhibit surface plasmon resonance (SPR), can be incorporated into thin film photovoltaic structures and as well as into substrates for enhancing the Raman spectroscopy performance. Recent demonstration of devices with plasmonic structures has limited utility due to the need for techniques of ordered MNPs for large area fabrication that are not currently available. This work examines the suitability of laser annealing for the fabrication of metal nanoparticles in large area optoelectronic devices, as well as the potential for tuning their optical properties precisely within the structure. Gold (Au), silver (Ag) and AuAg alloy particles were fabricated with laser annealing and fully characterized. Morphology characterization of the metal nanopartlcle films (MNFs) with scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and atomic force microscopy (AFM) revealed the control over the size by adjusting initial film thickness· and laser fluence. Optical characterization with UV-VIS spectrometry demonstrated that SPR of MNFs can be tuned by adjusting the alloy composition, the dielectric constant of surrounding medium, and the size distribution. This experimental result was confirmed by simulations. Direct incorporation of large well distributed Au nanoparticles into solar cells demonstrated enhanced performance. Dense MNFs with small particles decreased the photovoltaic efficiency. By contrast, in the case of Raman, small alloy particles with SPR wavelength close to the pump wavelength demonstrated the best enhancement. High resolution metal nanoparticle tracks written by the laser demonstrated gas sensing with good sensory capability. However, their high resistivity imposes difficulties in measurements. We conclude that with suitable optimisations the laser annealing technique studied here could be utilised for the fabrication of metal nanoparticles in large area optoelectronics devices. We demonstrate a number of such applications including solar cells and gas sensors and study the effects of metal nanoparticles within these devices in this thesis.

Vietnam is a rapidly developing, socially dynamic country, where interest in biomedical engineering activities has grown considerably in recent years. The leadership of the Vietnamese government, and of research and educational institutions, are well aware of the importance of this field for the development of the country and have instituted policies to promote its development. The political, economic and social environment within the country offers unique opportunities for the international community and this conference was intended to provide a vehicle for the sharing of experiences; development of support and collaboration networks for research; and exchange of ideas on how to improve the educational and entrepreneurial environment to better address the urgent needs of Vietnam. In January 2004, under the sponsorship of the U.S. National Science Foundation, a U.S. delegation that consisted of Biomedical Engineering professors from different universities in the United States, visited several universities and research institutions in Vietnam to assess the state of development of this field. This delegation proposed a five year plan that was enthusiastically embraced by the international scientific communities to actively develop collaborations with Vietnam. Within this framework, in July 2005, the First International Conference on the Development of Biomedical Engineering in Vietnam was held in Ho Chi Minh City. From that conference a Consortium of Vietnam-International Universities was created to advise and assist the development of Biomedical Engineering in Vietnamese universities.

Plasmonic nanoparticle synthesis provids a facile and cost-effective bottom-up solution to fabrication of nanoscaled structures. With effective packaging methods like embedding into polymer composites and superlattice assemblies, the chemically synthesized nanoparticles are promising candidates for functional devices. However, compared with precisely patterned surfaces commonly used for device fabrication, the structural inhomogenity and disorder in nanoparticle ensembles give rise to challenge in their characterization using conventional methods and in turn, their application. This work aims to develop models as guideline to design facile characterization methods that can be used to effectively describe the properties of disordered plasmonic nanoparticle ensembles. Two types of nanoparticle ensembles will be examined, including nanoparticle polymer composites and nanoparticle assemblies, representative of disordered nanoparticle packing on two length scales. Multipole expansion of different types and the effective medium approximation will be extensively used to establish models describing the effective optical properties of these systems as an ensemble average. Various analytical and numerical electrodynamic calculations will be performed to analyze the dependence of the effective optical response on structural parameters of the ensembles. The models can be used as a future guideline to design both synthetic procedures and characterization methods for chemically syntheized nanoparticle ensembles according to specific desired applications.
