The exodus event is the pivotal element in the life of the people of Israel and their covenant relationship with Yahweh, the God who delivered them from their servitude. Exodus has an active and dynamic element of formation for the life of the Jewish community. Since the Christian religion has adopted Exodus as Scripture, the Christian community uses Exodus to shape its life. It recognizes the God of Exodus as One who always acts on behalf of his people and demands absolute compliance with his will. In this case, appropriate interpretation of Exodus provides insight into God's will and the Christian community seeks compliance with God's will by living through its mission. The specific issue here is the theology of Church's mission and the question is how to employ the fruit of exegesis on Exodus in the mission. The matrix for testing this agenda is exegesis of Exodus, which occurs when informed understanding of Exodus brings about a development of first-hand interpretation of Exodus in the new context. This is achieved through hermeneutical engagement that brought the researcher into direct contact with the text of Exodus to interrogate the text. Constructs from socio-political and economic situation were developed and they constitute the matrix for the interrogation. By engaging it with the matrix of the exegesis of Exodus it is brought to a truly theological level. When applied to the mission matrix it is translated into Christian action by identifying specific ways of witnessing to Christ Jesus in the world of today. The primary task of this study is the illumination of this witnessing using the text of Exodus. Focusing on the overall theology of Exodus, materials in Exodus were interpreted and understood, and their meaning were articulated and conveyed through the matrix of inculturation mission theology. Context is the key to mission. Once the hermeneutical triangle was established, the study tied together two key biblical themes: Salvation and Mission under one methodology Context. In the Old Testament, Election is for mission. One who understands salvation cannot but be involved in mission for the salvation of all.

An essential biography of one of the Bible’s most powerful and inspiring books Exodus is the second book of the Hebrew Bible, but it may rank first in lasting cultural importance. It is here that the classic biblical themes of oppression and redemption, of human enslavement and divine salvation, are most dramatically expressed. Joel Baden tells the story of this influential and enduring book, tracing how its famous account of the Israelites’ journey to the promised land has been adopted and adapted for millennia, often in unexpected ways. Baden draws a distinction between the Exodus story and the book itself, which is one of the most multifaceted in the Bible, containing poems, law codes, rituals, and architectural plans. He shows how Exodus brings together an array of oral and written traditions from the ancient Middle East, and how it came to be ritualized in the Passover Seder and the Eucharist. Highlighting the remarkable resilience and flexibility of Exodus, Baden sheds light on how the bestowing of the Torah to Moses on Mount Sinai divided Jewish and Christian thinkers, on the importance of Exodus during the Reformation and the American Revolution, and on its uses in debates for and against slavery. He also traces how the defining narrative of ancient Israel helped to define Mormon social identity, the American civil rights movement, and liberation theology. Though three thousand years old, the Exodus—as history, as narrative, as metaphor, as model—continues to be vitally important for us today. Here is the essential biography of this incomparable spiritual masterpiece.

With an emphasis on the nature and importance of divine presence, "The Abiding Presence" provides a unique perspective on the overarching theology of Exodus drawing particular attention to God’s revelation at the burning bush, Sinai, and the tabernacle. Exploring the rich theological themes that emerge from the final form of the narrative the commentary also reflects on how these themes were employed by New Testament authors in understanding the life and ministry of Christ. Bridging the gap between accessibility and scholarly rigour, this commentary offers an excellent tool for ordinands, students, teachers in higher education and preachers to engage with the theology of the book in its Old Testament context as well as how its message is revealed in the New Testament and continues to speak today.
