DOWNLOAD EBOOKPhysics professor, bestselling author, and dynamic storyteller James Kakalios reveals the mind-bending science behind the seemingly basic things that keep our daily lives running, from our smart phones and digital “clouds” to x-ray machines and hybrid vehicles. Most of us are clueless when it comes to the physics that makes our modern world so convenient. What’s the simple science behind motion sensors, touch screens, and toasters? How do we glide through tolls using an E-Z Pass, or find our way to new places using GPS? In The Physics of Everyday Things, James Kakalios takes us on an amazing journey into the subatomic marvels that underlie so much of what we use and take for granted. Breaking down the world of things into a single day, Kakalios engages our curiosity about how our refrigerators keep food cool, how a plane manages to remain airborne, and how our wrist fitness monitors keep track of our steps. Each explanation is coupled with a story revealing the interplay of the astonishing invisible forces that surround us. Through this “narrative physics,” The Physics of Everyday Things demonstrates that—far from the abstractions conjured by terms like the Higgs Boson, black holes, and gravity waves—sophisticated science is also quite practical. With his signature clarity and inventiveness, Kakalios ignites our imaginations and enthralls us with the principles that make up our lives.

DOWNLOAD EBOOK"In recent years there has been a resurgence of interest in Hugo Gernsback, and the start of a serious study of the contribution he made to the development of science fiction. . . . It seemed to me that the time was due to reinvestigate the Gernsback era and dig into the facts surrounding the origins of Amazing Stories. I wanted to find out exactly why Hugo Gernsback had launched the magazine, what he was trying to achieve, and to consider what effects he had-good and bad. . . . Too many writers and editors from the Gernsback days have been unjustly neglected, or unfairly criticized. Now, I hope, Robert A. W. Lowndes and I have provided the grounds for a fair consideration of their efforts, and a true reconstruction of the development of science fiction. It's the closest to time travel you'll ever get. I hope you enjoy the trip."-Mike Ashley, Preface

DOWNLOAD EBOOKCities are a big deal. More people now live in them than don't, and with a growing world population, the urban jungle is only going to get busier in the coming decades. But how often do we stop to think about what makes our cities work? Cities are built using some of the most creative and revolutionary science and engineering ideas – from steel structures that scrape the sky to glass cables that help us communicate at the speed of light – but most of us are too busy to notice. Science and the City is your guidebook to that hidden world, helping you to uncover some of the remarkable technologies that keep the world's great metropolises moving. Laurie Winkless takes us around cities in six continents to find out how they're dealing with the challenges of feeding, housing, powering and connecting more people than ever before. In this book, you'll meet urban pioneers from history, along with today's experts in everything from roads to time, and you will uncover the vital role science has played in shaping the city around you. But more than that, by exploring cutting-edge research from labs across the world, you'll build your own vision of the megacity of tomorrow, based on science fact rather than science fiction. Science and the City is the perfect read for anyone curious about the world they live in.

DOWNLOAD EBOOKQuantum mechanics is the mathematical foundation for chemistry and physics on the microscopic scale. The energies and interactions between atoms and molecules can be described using the mathematics of matrices and quantized angular momentum. The seemingly esoteric mathematical language and quantum behavior of atoms and molecules have directly led to modern technology such as compact fluorescent bulbs, lasers, the global positioning system (GPS) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Quantum Mechanics in Everyday Life provides an introduction to the language of quantum and leads the reader to a deeper understanding of familiar, widely-used technology at the atomic and molecular level.

DOWNLOAD EBOOKExcerpt from The Mechanics of Daily Life Some apology seems necessary for the production of another treatise on a subject so well-worn as Mechanics. The present work, however, makes no attempt at the mathematical treatment generally adopted. It aims rather at using the subject as a means of scientific training, and as an illustration of the method of examining Nature by reasoning and experiment. It appeals to that large class of people in all stations of life who have not the training necessary for the enjoyment of Mathematical Gymnastics, but yet take keen interest in the purely experimental side of science. The mathematical side of the question has therefore been dispensed with, only the simplest arithmetical examples being admitted where reference to figures was unavoidable. The book is in the main the substance of a course of Oxford University Extension Lectures, delivered in various small towns in Devonshire in the Spring of 1891. The course was one of several, given under the auspices of the County Council, in their pioneer experiment of providing University Extension Teaching for rural districts, in connection with the Government grant towards Technical Instruction. The experience gained in the lectures has been of great service in the compilation of the work, and the lecture method has been to a great extent retained, as specially suited to the end in view. DOWNLOAD EBOOKFrank R. Paul is almost universally recognized as the "Father of Science Fiction Illustration," and rightly so, since his work has influenced and inspired generations of artists and visionaries over the past eighty years. From Flash Gordon to Luke Skywalker, Paul's presence is still being felt in the twenty-first century. Jerry Weist, noted Science Fiction historian, scholar, and founding editor of the prestigious EC comic fanzine Squa Tront, has turned his keen insight towards Paul, who envisioned a world of futuristic cities, space travel, and alien life forms. These fantastic visions were realized in the pages of Amazing Stories and hundreds of other science fiction pulps and digest magazines. Weist, who authored Ray Bradbury: An Illustrated Life (in collaboration with Bradbury) has brought together informative text on Paul and a visual record of nearly every one of his incredible covers, as well as some of his very best, and rarely seen, pen and ink interior illustrations. Featuring an Introduction by Hugo Award-winning science fiction illustrator Vincent Di Fate, this will be a visual feast for lovers of classic science fiction art.
