Turkey has witnessed remarkable sociocultural change under the regime of Recep Tayyip Erdogan and his Justice and Development Party (AKP), particularly regarding its religious communities. As individuals with pious identities have increasingly gained access to state power and accumulated economic influence, so religious appearances and practices have become more visible in Turkey's `secular' public spaces. More than this, consumption practices have changed and new Islamic and Islamist identities have emerged. This book investigates three of the most widespread faith-inspired communities in Turkey: the Gulen, Suleymanli and the Menzil. Nazli Alimen compares these communities, looking at their diverse interpretations of Islamic rules related to the body and dress, and how these different groups compete for power and control in Turkey. In tracing what motivates consumption practices, the book adds to the growing interest in the commercial aspects of modest and Islamic fashion. It also highlights the importance of clothing and bodily rituals (such as veiling, grooming and food choices) for the formation of community identities. Based on ethnographic research, Alimen analyses the relationship between the marketplace and religion, and shows how different communities interact with each other and state institutions. Of particular note are the varied expressions of Islamic masculinities and femininities at play. In November of 2002, the Justice and Development Party swept to victory in the Turkish parliamentary elections. Because of the party's Islamic roots, its electoral triumph has sparked a host of questions both in Turkey and in the West: Does the party harbor a secret Islamist agenda? Will the new government seek to overturn nearly a century of secularization stemming from Kemal Ataturk's early-twentieth-century reforms? Most fundamentally, is Islam compatible with democracy?In this penetrating work, M. Hakan Yavuz seeks to answer these questions, and to provide a comprehensive analysis of Islamic political identity in Turkey. He begins in the early twentieth century, when Kemal Ataturk led Turkey through a process of rapid secularization and crushed Islamic opposition to his authoritarian rule. Yavuz argues that, since Ataturk's death in 1938, however, Turkey has been gradually moving away from his militant secularism and experiencing "a quiet Muslim reformation." Islamic political identity is not homogeneous, says Yavuz, but can be modern and progressive as well as conservative and potentially authoritarian. While the West has traditionally seen Kemalism as an engine for reform against "reactionary" political Islam, in fact the Kemalist establishment has traditionally used the "Islamic threat" as an excuse to avoid democratization and thus hold on to power. Yavuz offers an account of the "soft coup" of 1997, in which the Kemalist military-bureaucratic establishment overthrew the democratically elected coalition government, which was led by the pro-Islamic Refah party. He argues that the soft coup plunged Turkey into a renewed legitimacy crisis which can only be resolved by the liberalization of the political system. The book ends with a discussion of the most recent election and its implications for Turkey and the Muslim world.Yavuz argues that Islamic social movements can be important agents for promoting a democratic and pluralistic society, and that the Turkish example holds long term promise for the rest of the Muslim world. Based on extensive fieldwork and interviews, this work offers a sophisticated new understanding of the role of political Islam in one of the world's most strategically important countries.

This ethnographic research project examines the generation of post-tariqa Tasavvuf (Sufism: a spiritual practice and philosophy recognised as the inner dimension of Islam) in a variety of private, semi-public, public, secular and sacred urban spaces in present-day Turkey. He draws contrasts and similarities between other Muslim communities in Europe, including the diverse Muslim groups in the Nordic countries that border the Baltic Sea; Finland, Sweden and Denmark. It examines the trade routes of the Vikings and the early Slavs and Balts who had commercial relations with Arab merchants and where the currency of the Caliphate is evidence for the trade in amber, furs and Middle Eastern silks and other luxury goods. The Tatars and the Jewish Qipch?qs arrived in these countries during the 14th century. They were brought here by the Grand Duke of Lithuania, Duke Vytautas (Witold)(1396-1430). During the Jagellon dynasty and centuries later the settlement of these Muslim Tatars was to continue. They became farmers and soldiers and they rose to a high status in the royal estates of Poland. Despite this assimilation, they resolutely retained their Muslim identity. For centuries these Tatar communities, in size, were second only to the large Jewish communities in this part of Europe. But from the 19th century, amidst wars, partition and genocide their numbers declined. During the age of the Soviet Union other Muslim communities have come to settle in these lands and they now threaten to outnumber the Tatars who have lived there for centuries. This book describes the Tatars and these other Muslims. It surveys their history, their Islamic beliefs, their culture, their literature and their life in New Europe today. There are, of course, other Muslim communities, larger in number and more diverse, in Nordic countries that border the Baltic Sea; Finland, Sweden and Denmark. These are also discussed in the contents of this book revealing contrasts and similarities and past contacts between the Tatars and the Muslims of Scandinavia. This is the first book in English on this subject where sources of information elsewhere are in Polish. Russian, Byelorussian, and Lithuanian.
