It's easy to rant about the fashion industry. Nowadays, a large part of it is based on producing and consuming gigantic amounts of clothing. Collections are manufactured all over the world at dizzying speeds and are sold all year round for extremely low or incredibly high prices. This fast-changing system seems hard to break into, or out of. How, as a designer, do you deal with this model in an ever-changing world and come up with innovative ways of designing, producing, promoting, financing, selling, and eventually consuming? How do you meet the needs of today's consumers and anticipate the needs of tomorrow's world? The masters program Fashion Matters at the Sandberg Instituut takes the liberty of addressing these issues. Copublished with Sandberg Instituut, Amsterdam Contributors Madeline Schwartzman, Javier Barcala, Christina Binkley, Raïsa Verhaegen, Timo Rissanen, Bradley Quinn, José Teunissen, Pauline van Dongen, Elisa Van Joolen, Liesbeth in 't Hout, Jurgen Bey, and the students of Fashion Matters at Sandberg Instituut

Against the backdrop of a longstanding practice of 'erasure' both in artistic and critical work, co-guest editors Paul Benzon and Sarah Sweeney take up challenging questions related to the aesthetics of erasure today in the digital era. They investigate new meanings and the relevance of said practice within twenty-first century contemporary contexts typically defined by digital knowledge production, preservation, and sharing. Contributing authors give expression to five sites of inquiry mapped by the editors within the expansive practice of erasure - Power, Capital, Signal and Noise, Technology and Archive. Pat Badani, Editor-in-Chief.

When Leo XIII promulgated Aeterni Patris in 1879, he stipulated that the "Leonine," or official, edition of the Summa should always be printed in conjunction with Cajetan's Commentary. For five hundred years they were studied together. Generations were trained by reading through the Summa article by article with Cajetan's commentaries in hand. Early printed editions of the Summa typically included them in a Talmudic arrangement, as marginal text running around each article by Aquinas. This edition imitates that example. Recently, serious thinkers of all denominations-and none-have found new reasons to be interested in St. Thomas. His text is deceptively simple, yet important issues are handled in every article, sometimes below the surface. Cajetan extracts these hidden issues, and explains and elaborates on them with remarkable affinity to modern analytical philosophy. Part of that affinity lies in the use of modal logic, a tool whose importance was overlooked between the Renaissance and the twentieth century. The time is ripe for an analytically-inspired translation of Thomas: hence this volume. Never until now has Cajetan's Commentary been put into English in its entirety. William Marshner's translation is consistent with fidelity to the technical force of the original. The translator's footnotes acknowledge what empirical science has made obsolete in the work of St. Thomas, and also make clear how much today's science would have saved Thomas useless labor. This volume will, for the first time, make Cajetan's help available to the modern reader.

Subjective Realist Cinema looks at the fragmented narratives and multiple realities of a wide range of films that depict subjective experience and employ “subjective realist” narration, including recent examples such as Mulholland Drive, Memento, and Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. The author proposes that an understanding of the narrative structures of these films, particularly their use of mixed and multiple realities, enhances viewers’ enjoyment and comprehension of such films, and that such comprehension offers a key to understanding contemporary filmmaking.

Romanticism and Speculative Realism features a range of scholars working at the intersection of literary poetics and philosophy. It considers how the writing of the Romantic era reconceptualizes the human imagination, the natural world, and the language that correlates them in radical ways that can advance current speculative debates concerning new ontologies and new materialisms. In their wide-ranging examinations of canonical and non-canonical romantic writers, the scholars gathered here rethink the connections between the human and non-human world to envision speculative modes of social being and ecological politics. Spanning historical and national frameworks-from historical romanticism to contemporary post-romantic ecology, and from British and German romanticism to global modernity-these essays examine life in all its varied forms in, and beyond, the Anthropocene.
