This book comes out at a very opportune time when the sector is struggling with sanitation marketing that is considered an organic next step for rural communities that have been declared open defecation free. Besides, this publication comes in to address the gaps that face the peri-urban spaces that are facing population explosion and require innovative ways of dealing with mostly non-sewered sanitation services. This guide/manual was developed as part of a training package to support business development skills training for local sanitation entrepreneurs in Kenya. Financial and technical support was provided by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) under the Kenya integrated water and sanitation (KIWASH) project. KIWASH was a five year (2015-2020) project implemented by the Development Alternatives Incorporation (DAI) across nine counties. One of the key goals of KIWASH was to help trigger and activate demand for low cost affordable sanitation technologies in rural and low income communities. The overall objective of this manual is to equip sanitation specialists and public resource persons with the basic concepts and tools, to facilitate entrepreneurship and financial literacy training for start-up sanitation entrepreneurs in rural communities. Specifically, this manual is designed to help participants: 1) Learn the basic concepts of entrepreneurship and characteristics of successful entrepreneurs; 2) Learn and practice essential marketing techniques for sanitation products and services; 3) Develop money management competencies necessary to succeed as a small-scale entrepreneur; 4) Build necessary leadership and management skills to grow successful sanitation enterprises. Overall, the guide/manual is useful in guiding implementation of sanitation marketing projects, and provides concise content for nurturing and building the capacity of local sanitation enterprises/entrepreneurs. Improved business performance by these businesses means timely response to demand from households. This book is a toolkit which incorporates a Training Guide/Manual as well as a Workbook for entrepreneurs.

This open access book illustrates a new type of formative intervention for in-service teacher training in entrepreneurship education. The book describes a Change Laboratory and shows how teachers and workshop assistants develop the idea of a multidisciplinary project entailing the design of a self-service and parking lot in a dismissed area close to the city centre. The multidisciplinary project is taken as example of how an idea is debated and turned into collective action and change, the very essence of initiative and entrepreneurship. The Change Laboratory thus increases the participation of students, teachers and stakeholders in the school towards a new curriculum through the implementation of a multidisciplinary project connecting school with the world outside and working life. The book features a foreword by Luke Pittaway, USASBE Entrepreneurship Educator of 2018. The manuscript discusses key concepts of Cultural Historical Activity Theory's Change Laboratory as a formative intervention in a coherent and accessible manner. Beyond that it carefully illustrates how the Change Laboratory and its principles of double stimulation and ascending from the abstract to the concrete can be used as a theory of change to address one of the difficult and new demands of the European Union's New Skills Agenda. The author takes the reader through the expansive learning journey and uses strong evidence to show how a new object can be developed, and how associated tensions and contradictions can be surfaced and tackled by actors with a partially shared object, and how a new concept can be formed and enriched through implementation and reflection in a manner that generates collective transformative agency. (Reviewer) This project has received funding from the European Union's Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme under the Marie Sklodowska-Curie Grant Agreement No. 654101.; Discusses a new and emerging topic in teacher training For the first time the change laboratory is used for teacher training in entrepreneurship Discusses an example of how the change laboratory can be implemented in a multidisciplinary project This work was published by Saint Philip Street Press pursuant to a Creative Commons license permitting commercial use. The recent momentum and urgency around translating science and technology into health innovation is inspiring. It is transforming academia, too, as the rapidly-evolving world of health innovation has given rise to a new breed of academic - the academic entrepreneur - who works to move ideas from initial research to practical implementation. The work of these individuals is crucial to realizing the potential of investments in better care, and yet there existed no central repository for information and wisdom relevant to their mission; no place to house and explore the evolving knowledge base around translating evidence into impact. We aim to build one. In the spirit of collaboration, the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP) Research Institute collaborated with the University of Pennsylvania's (Penn) Institute for Translational Medicine and Therapeutics (ITMAT) to seed fund a grassroots effort of editors, subject matter experts, and translational research students to create a free open education resource stored on ScholarlyCommons (University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, PA).Academic Entrepreneurship seeks to build a diverse community of empowered professionals who know how to bridge the worlds of academic research and commercialization to turn ideas and discoveries into innovations that provide value to patients, providers, and healthcare systems, thereby realizing full market potential and societal impact. This book is a repository of tools, advice, and best practices that establishes a foundation for academic researchers and innovators wherever they may reside.Recognizing that academic entrepreneurs are busy and bright, and have limited time to learn entrepreneurship, the chapters in this book were designed as an efficient and state-of-the-art source of guidance. With carefully curated content as a strong foundation, the reader will have quick introductions to key topics in academic entrepreneurship and innovations with a list of resources for those who wish to go further. This book was created as a limited print run of the first edition of the living content stored in the University of Pennsylvania's open access repository, ScholarlyCommons, as of 1/1/2020. As a living e-textbook, the content of Academic Entrepreneurship for Medical and Health Scientists is continuously enhanced and revised.
