Antonio Alatorre reunió, en 1993, trece artículos en los que expone su manera de ver la literatura y de entender y ejercer la crítica literaria. No formula ninguna "teoría literaria" ni ninguna "metodología" (nada más ajeno a sus afanes), simplemente propone su manera de entender dos fenómenos indisolublemente trabados: la literatura y la lectura. Alatorre muestra que el que lee y, muy importante, siente lo que lee, es ya un crítico literario en potencia: con las herramientas adecuadas será capaz de pensar críticamente y de explicar las razones de la emoción experimentada. El crítico no es sino un lector más "formado", más "instruido", dotado de mayor capacidad de recepción, de mayor sagacidad literaria y de la capacidad y honradez para transmitir elocuente y claramente su experiencia de lector. Este "librito" se publicó originalmente en la colección Lecturas Mexicanas de Conaculta. Actualmente esta edición se encuentra agotada. De 1993 a 2010, Alatorre añadió algunas noticias más, pulió una que otra idea (pocas) y corrigió poquísimas cosillas de estilo. Se ofrece esta nueva edición (algo corregida y añadida) para conmemorar los 90 años del nacimiento de Antonio Alatorre.

Democracy is today a concept that is overwhelmingly positively evaluated almost everywhere. A lot has been written about socio-economic and cultural backgrounds of democratic regimes as well as their institutional settings. By contrast, not much is known about the political manoeuvres and speech acts by which 'democracy' has been tied to particular regions and cultures in concrete historical situations. This book discusses a series of efforts to rhetorically produce a particular Nordic version of democracy. It shows that the rhetorical figure 'Nordic democracy' was a product of the age of totalitarianism and the Cold War. It explores the ways in which 'Nordic democracy' was used, mainly by the social democrats, to provide the welfare politics with cultural and historical legitimacy and foundations. Thus, it also acknowledges the ideological and geopolitical context in which the 'Nordic welfare state' was conceptualised and canonised. Ofrece referencias conceptuales formuladas por tericos (Karl Marx, Georg Lukcs, Gerald Genette y Robert Jauss) que privilegian una crtica literaria basada en las interconexiones entre el desarrollo social y la cosmovisin que se expresa en las novellas que refl ejan, de uno u otro modo, dicha realidad. El ensayo precisa que la novella boliviana posee la capacidad de tomar de la vida de los trabajadores sus experiencias ms esenciales, y las expresa artsticamente. Novela que difi ere en cuanto a su funcin de sus semejantes las novelas de la Revolucin Mexicana y de la Revolucin Cubana.
